One other thing I'd like to add Yavar, is the amount of synths that are bouncing all over the Main Title track in the film, that go practically unheard (if they're even there at all) on the LP/CD.
I must play the CD again and listen more intently.

This doesn't really relate to Goldsmith...but...many composers did the same thing! Also, some recordings are different from each other. Case in point, the Japanese vinyl release of INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM did without the irritating tap-dancing noise over the main title -- Kate Capshaw singing ANYTHING GOES -- while the American pressing had enough noise to make Ann Miller proud! ??

MacArthur is good but better than PATTON?
I do like the film MACARTHUR, . Fine WWII film.

Pretty much a consensus regarding the superior rerecords.

For "Damien—Omen II", I was initially disappointed by the LP. I felt it had been 'concertized' and lost some of the raw edge I fell in love with in the movie. However, I have since grown to love this recording for its own merits. I do, however, in this case, prefer the film recording.

I find I do prefer the film recording. There's more urgency, and I think the choir and brass are a force to be reckoned with. The grit and 'bite' is so important with this one. Broken Ice is such a tour de force on the film recording and just delights in that obscene over-the-top approach that the album versions don't quite reach.

And of course, the main and end titles just aren't the same without that synth bass line. The film sketches indicate it's an ARP-2600 fed through an echo-plex. Even though it only makes a few appearances, that sound defines the entire score for me. A brilliant choice by Goldsmith that really captures the essence of the film in one sound.

I agree with all this, and practically worship that score trilogy.

Love the Capricorn One film music, but if the first disc of the 2015 Intrada is the separate soundtrack recording I must say I prefer it. I also prefer the 2015 disc one to the re-recording, fwiw.

I'm old enough to have bought soundtrack LPs in the sixties, & I had no idea that the music wasn't always the music that I heard in the film (in fact I never really gave it any thought), Ben-Hur, The Great Escape, In Like Flint, Patton (I was surprised that album was recorded only down the road from the cinema where I saw the film in West London's Queensway). Usually it was a few months between seeing the film & buying the soundtrack, so I didn't notice any musical differences. There's a few Goldsmith soundtracks where both the original & re-recordings are on the same disc, Sebastian, Wild Rovers & Damien: Omen II (& maybe a couple of others), I'm always impressed how well the originals work as albums (but sometimes I still prefer the album versions).

I'm a little surprised Ben Hur and The Great Escape didn't stick out to you as different performances; I think those re-recordings are pretty noticeably different. Though if this was a time when you could only hear the films in theater, I guess it was harder to notice.

Now to catch up on the other replies...

I appreciate the extra details Kev! I wonder why no one else here has really posted about them before; it sounds practically like a Damien: Omen II situation.

No offense, but you might just bother to read the original post when you reply in a thread. smile I mentioned John Williams immediately as the example for what I was talking about (i.e. Jaws/The Fury), though I should point out that Temple of Doom is not at all what I'm talking about in this thread as, tap-dancing noise or not, I'm pretty sure the Japanese vinyl release was not using some unique new recording of the main title... I know it doesn't happen too infrequently, but this thread in particular seems cursed with folks who want to chime in without even trying to understand the subject it's about...

Afraid I've gotta issue a minor correction with you too, Wagner Almighty -- I'm not sure what Intrada release you're confusing with Capricorn One, but both of their times issuing the film recording of that score, they only put out a single disc so there can't be a "first disc": http://store.intrada.com/s.nl/it.A/id.9712/.f
Original: http://store.intrada.com/s.nl/it.A/id.4362/.f

A two-disc set -- one with the film recording and one with the unique album recording -- would make total sense, but no label has produced that yet. I think Perseverance last reissued the album recording on its own and it seems to still be available from them. Therefore I think their license has to run out before another label could potentially reissue the film and album recordings together for the first time in a two disc set:

I boo-boo'ed. It is bizarre that the rerecording and original haven't been made into a 2 disc.

I don't know, I love my 2015 and Collector's Choice cds, not sure how much better I need them to sound. That said, I am a collector... wink
