does anyone have any idea how many times Fernando Rey turned up in a western playing a priest?
im guessing but i suspect it could have been maybe four or five times?
Return of the seven was the first time i remember seeing him as a priest. Then he was also a priest in navajo joe with Burt reynolds and Land Raiders with Telly savalas. im sure there are more.
But was it more than Michael Ripper played a barman/landlord?

im sure thats true, tone. i know rey did work as an extra when he started out and then did many Spanish films before breaking into italian epics and then American films. i just wondered how many times he was father or padre!

Rey was in a number of other westerns, but not as a padre. In 1962's THE SAVAGE GUNS, he played "Don Hernan." In SON OF A GUNFIGHTER (1965), he was the rancher "Don Pedro Fortuna." In 1968's VILLA RIDES, he was "Fuentes." In GUNS OF THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (1969), he played the revolutionary "Quintero." In 1969's political spaghetti western, THE PRICE OF POWER, he played "Pinkerton," the head of the famous detective agency. In Sergio Corbucci's COMPANEROS (1970), he was "Prof. Xantos." He played an "Old Blind Man" in the 1971 Telly Savalas western A TOWN CALLED HELL. And finally, he was a "Railroad Colonel" in 1985's comedy-western RUSTLERS' RHAPSODY.

A Town Called Hell - I remember as a kid we had the movie tie in novel on the shelf by William Terry in which it was "A Town Called Bastard," with selected promo images on the cover from the "major motion picture." It's long since been lost, but I remember that book with affection.

yeah in villa rides - which i watched again yesterday - he was one of Huertas officers who is tasked with the firing squad for Villa.
so a professor, a pinkerton, but no more padres.
yes town called bastard was indeed changed to hell.
weird western where i think telly savalas must have been in spain for something else coz his character was only alive long enough for about 2 days shooting. ditto Al sollozzo Lettieri.
