After seeing the magnificent Hans Zimmer Revealed concert last Saturday in London my mate and I purchased the Silva Screen 6 cd epic release The Music Of Hans Zimmer - The Definitive Collection.
Before anyone pours scorn on this release please give it a well earned try! Hans Zimmer's music is given very faithful and powerful renditions of all his major scores, some just themes and cues, others whole suites.
There is plenty of Pirates and Batman and these are given very good workouts as are some nice surprises such as King Arthur, Spirit and The Last Samurai.
Its great to have music from 12 Years A Slave, Winter's Tale and The Lone Ranger on the set as well as Frost / Nixon and A World Apart.
Well performed by The London Music Works and The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra this set gives a real detailed look at Zimmer's work from the beginning (1988) to the present (Spider-man 2).
Like everything in life it is not perfect - I would have loved to have seen Black Rain, As Good As It Gets and Broken Arrow on the play list as well as a suite from Spiderman 2 (as long as it did not include Electro and its ramblings!). And yes, there will be people out there who say that there was too much of the Pirates scores and the Dark Knight scores.
But this set must be aimed at the more commercial market....
So give it a try - this is one set that encompasses a fine composer (who gets knocked because of the directors and producers love to repeat the sound verbatim!) showing his diverse talents and extreme gift for creating a load of superb tunes!

It was a pleasure recording the orchestral tracks for Silva
It really is an excellent set. The artwork is lovely and the music is top notch. The new tracks are fine, and the large chunks from the Batman and Pirates scores and the recycling old cover tracks don't bother me ( although I have most all of them from previous releases ) since yes, this set is aimed at the general public. But for me it is good to have all the Zimmer cover versions all in one box.
In fact the tracks from the Pirates films are pretty damn good, I prefer Fitzpatrick's take on a few over the film tracks.
And I've mentioned before that the cover of 180 BPM from Angels and Demons is flat out brilliant.
Yep totally agree with everything you say. And that track from Angels and Demons is a discovery for me....what a powerhouse of a track with a touch of Morricone thrown in!
I have so far heard 3 of the 6 CDs. Quite varied stuff, the Pirates stuff I can totally do without, while Man Of Steel for instance is really cool.
But it looks like a nice set.

Well, the "no samples" stuff is just part of the problem. I also think there were too many tracks from those films, but I guess the bottom line is that Zimmer in Pirates mode is not really the Zimmer I used to love in the 80s/90s. But I guess other listeners may enjoy it.
Oh man the Pirates stuff is generally very good, some of it is GREAT! The version of The Kraken for me outshines the film version being heavier on more of a "groovy" ( for lack of a better term ) take for piano and drums. Also they really do a good job on the 10 minute "I Don't Think Now Is The Best Time". Of course the sonics are going to be different as those thundering Zimmer synths are gone and this is a more orchestral effort. It isn't identical to the film versions but just about every Pirates track stands on its own as a fine listen.
Same with the Dark Knight tracks.
Again I'm gonna pimp 160BPM from Angels & Demons as it really rocks the freakin' house. Dynamic playing and choir work. Also I did enjoy the Man Of Steel track as well as the excellent track from Rush.
I bought it at light speed and listened to all CDs more than once. Though I strongly prefer the originals there is some striking exception: Catwoman's theme performance in this set is dazzling and splendid
This 6 cd set looks superb with all my other boxsets but would look even better with a few companion sets e.g. John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner. And yes, I would more than happy to see a John Barry 6 cd set as well!
