At the moment I am enjoying south american flavored scores with pan flutes. Recently I`ve been listening to Horner`s HOUSE OF CARDS and VIBES, Goldsmith`s MEDICNE MAN and UNDER FIRE (although that is central american) and the John Scott COUSTEAU / AMAZON scores.

Any other recommedations?

Ennio Morricone's THE MISSION would seem an obvious one. He also uses pan pipes in CASUALTIES OF WAR.

Casualties of War was the one that sprang to mind for me, too. I saw video of Morricone conducting the pan flute players on the score of the film - very impressive.

Another one worth digging out is Picnic at Hanging Rock - available on LP, if not CD - music largely by Gheorghe Zamfir, who seems responsible single-handedly for this instrument's sudden popularity in the 70s.

Once Upon A time In America, that sounds like pan flutes, & the play-out of the first Kill Bill film, The Lonely Shepherd, Gheorghe Zamfir, as catchy as hell.

Yeah, ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA is really the ultimate example of pan flutes in film scores, and I'm surprised it took so many posts before it was mentioned.

Unfortunately for the instrument, with all those 'pan pipe moods' CDs, it's often associated with something cheesy these days. But in itself and used correctly (like in OUATIA), it's a lovely sound.

Derrr - yes, Cockeye's theme. And Oceano and The Battle of Algiers include either pan flutes or something that sounds like them - possibly a bass flute or something pitched even lower. I don't find it easy to tell the difference.

Kill Bill was Zamfir again, if memory serves.

Isn't that a panflute in "Willow"?

James Horner's "Where the River Runs Black" - I think that they might be sampled or synth pan flutes, I am not sure. It is a lovely score though.

Isn't that a shakuhachi, Horner's preferred flute?

Thanks for the suggestions smile THE MISSION is a true classic. I absolutely love it. At the moment I`m really interested in south american / latin scores with pan flutes. That`s why ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA although being one of my favorite Morricone scores doesn`t really fit.

Any suggestions regarding latin flavored pan flute scores like VIBES or the John Scott AMAZON?

Robert Folk's NEVERENDING STORY 2 uses two 'dueling' pan flutes to gorgeous effect amidst his wistful, KRULL-like orchestral/choral score. Can't recommend this one enough - Great soaring orchestral fantasy writing, pure magic and a ton of enthusiasm/energy.

Christopher Young's THE OASIS uses pan flutes throughout, to sometime soothing and other times very dissonant effect. VERY cool music.

Michael Kamen's sparse, often heartbreaking score to CRUSOE uses pan flutes to evocative and eerie effect as well.

Luis Bacalov uses pan pipes/flutes in many of his scores, my favorite being SEA OF DREAMS:

Actually Scott used recorders for the "native" flute sounds in Amazon. But as far as authentic South American pan pipes (or "zampoƱas" as they are more accurately known) I would recommend George Fenton's A Handful Of Dust, which uses them pretty extensively.

I love Nicholas Hooper's score for this BBC TV series...

I've no idea if the CD is still available.

"Jake Speed" (Mark Snow) uses them in a number of cues, like this one:

more south american than The mission?? is there such a thing??!

to think one day i bought zamphirs The light of experience single on 45rpm!!

thor is right - back in the early 90s pan pipe moods went into overdrive and became what you bought your nan for xmas - made the instrument a little passe and over used.

However, when used right on a film score, and used sparingly to be effective, they can be great.

i have a feeling Morricone used pan pipes on City of joy and the more recent score that was deliberately mission-like with choirs whose title escapes my mind. will look it up. ah, casa brusciata
