Is anyone here old enough to remember these two shows on Radio 2 back in the seventies?

In those days, this was the only way for me to hear clips of many film soundtracks before we had the era of CDs and digital. But this was also before the advent of the internet when I finally realized there were lots of other people interested in soundtracks.

I think Monday Movie Quiz (10-10:30 pm) was presented by Ray Moore with Star Sound after that between 10:30 and 11pm. People would write in with requests. The demographic of the audience meant that much was devoted to wartime musicals but occasionally we'd hear other music.

I still remember to this when Barry's OHMSS theme was played as the presenter expressed surprise that it hadn't been played before. Afterwards he made the point that (in 1979) OHMSS was voted the best in the series by the James Bond fan club!

I prefer today's world which, for me, is still a golden era of soundtrack collecting, but I do think back to those days of the odd radio show and trudging round record stores in the north west of England, often in the rain, looking for the odd affordable gem in their soundtracks section.

Or worse, asking for soundtracks to be ordered from disinterested sales staff (who looked at me like some weirdo), only to find out that they had long since been out of print.

I go back to the sixties. There was a weekly program of film music on BBC radio, I can't for the life of me remember who presented it (it'll come). I can still remember the breezy intro music. They'd play all the latest film music LP's (& being the mid-sixties there was some great stuff), plus older tracks. I had about four reels of taped shows (done on my Grundig tape recorder) long gone now, plus there was Movie-Go-Round, a movie magazine program (on Sundays I think).

My (BBC) Radio 2 listening started in the early 70s, though of course I'd heard much radio courtesy of my parents for many years prior. But, actually tuning in to a programme ... say 1971 or 72 ... I recall that on the day I had my first (portable) cassette recorder - Decca - I recorded some music from a film music programme including Henry Mancini's Charade.

And on another occasion I got a recording of Ennio Morricone's Once Upon a Time in the West / C'era una volta il west.

And, just as I was getting hooked: there was a John Barry special (perhaps over two weeks) in which I got to hear and record: King Rat March, Doors and Bikes and Things, I Did What You Told Me (Adam Faith) and others.

But I'm convinced that the programme was broadcast on a Saturday evening and was not a quiz, per se.

During the 1970s, whilst at University, I would tune in during a weekday evening and on one occasion heard a reference to the The John Barry Appreciation Society ... a letter was soon despatched smile

... and in the early 1980s I do recall entering a quiz on the radio ... name that tune - it was Ron Goodwin's Miss Marple's Theme - and won two LPs: Sharky's Machine and The Border. That was likely to have been a Monday broadcast.

I recall the name Ray Moore very well ... but, sorry, I struggle to recall the two programme names you mention. Either or both could be programmes I tuned into - and most likely - but ...

... no, as I type I feel both names are coming back to me. you wait: by tomorrow I'll probably have a clear recollection! smile

There was a previous thread about Star Sound; fairly brief but well-remembered by a few -

Thanks for those replies.

I admit I don't know of any soundtrack related radio shows now. I did enjoy listening to the special shows, particularly the five parter on BBC radio about John Barry about twenty years ago.

What I liked about the more generic show was that you never knew what was coming up and, when listening live, it at least compelled you to listen to stuff you ordinarily wouldn't. I found myself owning several soundtracks on the basis of what I heard on Star Sound.

When I heard Star Sound play extracts from "Once Upon A Time In The West" I HAD to have that soundtrack!

I know in this day and age, we all have our music on media players so can flip to music tracks as we wish, but I'm one of those who likes to listen to particular soundtrack albums from start to finish as I would have done with the vinyl versions.
