I just want to express my deepest sympathy and sorrow for the tragedy that took place in your country yesterday. This fine young man was murdered for no reason and it is heartbreaking. The dignified reactions of your countrymen and the honorable way that the young soldier was treated as he travelled home should make you very proud. Too often my country has suffered similar tragedy but we are reminded that it crosses all borders and breaks all hearts.

This is not a political statement in any way. It is a respectful expression of sympathy. Rest in peace Nathan Cirillo.

I've said before that FSM posts need a "like" button....I know it's not going to happen, but you would get a "like" for that....

Thank you so much for your words, Eee-Dee (and yours too, Greg).

I can only speak for my own little corner of this country, but everyone here in my part of it is pretty much stunned into silence. Not because we never thought it could never happen (we are not that naive), but because of the despairing, ugly and cowardly randomness of the act.
I find it equally distressing (thought I can't exactly say why) that the killer was, for all intents and purposes, a Canadian himself.

In a disturbing bit of personal coincidence, my son (only 3 years younger than Cirillo) became a Private in the Reserves just 3 months ago.

All of this adds to my anxiety to a gut-churning degree, but I know it's nothing compared to what a lot of other people go through.

Mr Greg and Octoberman, thank you for your kind words. This really broke many hearts, including mine. The sight of the young man's dogs waiting for him to come home left me speechless.

Octoberman, you must be so proud of your son and I wish him Godspeed as he embarks on this next chapter in his young life.

A terrible and senseless tragedy. My heart goes out to you and your countrymen. I wish there was a way to squash this radicalist insanity like the cockroach infestation that it is, but unfortunately it just keeps on breeding in the hearts and minds of the desperate and ignorant.

My wife and I visited Canada last month. It's easily one of the nicest places on earth. What happened in Ottawa makes no sense and it is tragic that a soldier's life was taken for no reason. Same goes for the car incident. Condolences to the good Canadian people in general.
