I'm going to buy only one. Which to you recommend? I'm not a stickler for original tracks, I just want the best album.

Interested in opinions on content, performance, and recording quality.

Thanks in advance.

The TFC recording wins on all counts. It sounds great, it has much more music, and the performance is very energetic and crisp as well.

If you're truly not a stickler for the original tracks, go with the Tribute rerecording.

to be perfectly honest...
Bill, John and Anna did such a FRIGGIN' PERFECT JOB, that you would NEVER KNOW that it WASN'T Herrmann conducting!!!
Man... I wish they were able to continue their recordings! frown

I agree. I would love to hear a beautiful re recording of Herrmann's Moby Dick but that's probably just a pipe dream.

Go with the TFC re-recording if you're getting only one, as it has much more music and sports very fine packaging. But be warned, several of the tracks end very abruptly in the middle of the music (it then continues on the next track) and there are a couple of cues where the musicians just can't match the original performance. My favorite track on the Cloud Nine OST is The Phorarhacos. On TFC's edition the music is split into two tracks - The Shadow and The Bird.

The TFC is a wonderful recording but I just wanted to point out a couple of things so you know what you're getting.

Thank you, that is helpful.

I normally almost always prefer the original tracks (generally speaking).... HOWEVER, in this case, I like the rerecording!

The Tribute rerecording is so magnificent, who needs the original soundtrack? The music for the island has never sounded as magical.

I agree 100%. All of the Tribute CDs are magnificent! I only wish Anna, Bill and John were able to do a few more.

For what it's worth, both versions are on Spotify now so you could give each of them a full listen before deciding.

I bumped this particular thread in February and several posters responded adding weight to the subject:

Hope it helps. There are a multitude of threads based solely on MI in the FSM db. They would take some time to check out.
