Tonight on his program, in the 9:00 PM Pacific segment, KUSC FM (91.5) DJ Jim Svejda will interview John Mauceri and present selections from the new "Music For Hitchcock" CD.

Sorry I couldn't post this alert sooner, but I only just now heard the announcement...

Man do I miss Mauceri! He would be with us all summer at the Hollywood Bowl ending with the "Big Picture" which he created. His talks between pieces were priceless. Sigh.

Amen, brother.

I just dashed off a thank-you note to Mr. Svejda. In it, I piggy-backed just a bit on the legendary incident he and Mauceri had discussed, the time when Dimitri Tiomkin, accepting an Oscar, thanked his collaborators: Beethoven, Brahms, Wagner, Tchaikovsky…

QUOTH MESELF:

You probably already know this story, which is sort of a sequel to the Tiomkin Oscar speech donnybrook you and Mr. Mauceri related, but just in case:

The way I've heard it, Franz Waxman was one of those composers outraged at Tiomkin and his acceptance remarks, and at some time and place he confronted Tiomkin about it. When Waxman scolded Tiomkin for referring to Wagner, Beethoven, Brahms, etc., and objected to the implied criticism of film music, Tiomkin deadpanned, "But Franz, I don't see why you should feel insulted. I never detect the influence of any of these great composers in your music."

This time, I've had a little bit more warning: Jim Svejda says he'll have more film music Thursday night, 10/30, because his guest will be distinguished L. A. Times film critic Kenneth Turan plugging his new book.

(I'll start a new thread, to get the word out.)

Hey Prestone thanks for jarring the old memory banks with the subject title. Wonder if ol' Mauce still lives in New City (just over the border from m'old stomping grounds):
