As for the sense of fun in Giacchino's writing, I think I know what is being spoken about. I might call it exuberance. It might be a serious piece (think of the opening of his score to Up, which probably won him the Oscar. Certainly a serious piece for a very moving bit of film, but his pure love and enthusiasm for composing film music really comes through...as it always does with him really).

Nice one - exuberance is exactly the right word for it.

I shall listen with Tall Guy's ears next time to pick up on playfulness which we ALL need in our lives.

Joan, I'd send them over, but don't know what I'd do with my glasses.

Yeah, we definitely disagree on most every one of your points! I still think Cutthroat Island is David Arnold (or Nicholas Dodd, if you really want to split hairs) when it comes up.

Even when McNeely was being forced to rip off Williams SUPER hard early in his career, based on what he'd later do when freed (mostly) of the temptrackitis, you can hear stuff like Iron Will and easily pick out McNeely's unique sound in there (the AFO action cues, which are fantastic, sound more like McNeely than Goldsmith or Williams).

Should film music be considered "fun"? Isn't it a serious business with serious music? I would mainly associate comedy films with fun music, which I dislike.

I'm now listening to a "serious" Morricone score...

Completely agree! Anyone having fun while listening to film music is doing it wrong.

Back to the topic at hand:

I have only one album by Michael What's-His-Name - "The Incredibles." I never saw the film, but I like the music very much. It has a 60s spy sound, which we all know is very serious and under no circumstances fun or pleasure-inducing. It is a very good album. I have no idea what the guy sounds like outside of this score.

What?? I have fun listening to many Mozart works and I do it completely right! Yes, film music is a serious business - don't you realize what an achievement it is for a composer to make you have a really good time listening to his work? Having great fun is a VERY serious business!

It should not, under any circumstances, be fun! It should be a chore! You must come away from listening to film music feeling exhausted, downtrodden, and hopeless.

If I want fun in my music I listen to Boney M or Modern Talking! It's the classical stuff when it gets really serious. Apparently...

I am never serious about any kind of music, only irreverent.

Irreverent that you only listen to 60s Barry and 70s Morricone?

I have one Barry from the 70s and at least one Morricone post-1975. And I have 60s Morricone also.
