Could be great! I loved Brian Tyler's Far Cry 3 stuff. This could be equally experimental, challenging, and exciting.

Could be great! I loved Brian Tyler's Far Cry 3 stuff. This could be equally experimental, challenging, and exciting.

Tyler's Far Cry 3 was exceptional, and such a progressive step forward for his style and flourish that I really had felt nothing in his Marvel scores really challenges him. Far Cry 3 and Now You See Me have been masterful scores, and I hope he can lean more on that daring bent for The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

But back to Martinez -- one of my favorite modern composers since hearing his work on Traffic -- I hope that Ubisoft lets him deliver his talents! A lot of composers have remarked about the fruitful and inspiring work they find in the video game medium.

Ubisoft Announces Collaboration with Cliff Martinez on Far Cry 4® Soundtrack
Drive, Traffic and Spring Breakers composer pens the soundtrack for upcoming open-world shooter Far Cry 4

November 3, 2014– Today, Ubisoft® announces that it partnered with film composer and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Cliff Martinez to compose the original game soundtrack for its upcoming open-world, first-person shooter Far Cry 4, the much-anticipated sequel to the #1 rated shooter of 2012.* Cliff has a background in music as a former member of the award-winning rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers and has composed scores for films including “Traffic,” “Drive” and “Spring Breakers.”

Working with Ubisoft Montreal’s Far Cry 4’s Music Designer Jerome Angelot, Music Supervisor Simon Landry and Audio Director Tony Gronick, Cliff created original music specifically for Far Cry 4’s gameplay and helped bring to life the gorgeous, yet ruthless environment and the unforgettable characters found in the game.

“Bringing Cliff on board was a no-brainer. Collaborating with him was a dream. He has the remarkable ability to portray compelling emotions and elevate the mundane into extraordinary with his musical talent,” said Tony Gronick, Audio Director for Far Cry 4, Ubisoft. “Cliff delivered everything I hoped for. I’m so proud of the music in Far Cry 4 and am thankful for the opportunity to work with him.”

“It was an honor to be asked to write the music for the Far Cry 4 game as my first full-length video game soundtrack,” said Cliff Martinez. “It was exciting for me to be asked to take my usual minimalistic cinematic approach to the immersive game world. Any game where you can ride on a rampaging elephant is a project you can't turn down!”

In Far Cry 4, players find themselves in Kyrat, a breathtaking, perilous and wild region of the Himalayas struggling under the regime of a despotic self-appointed king. Using a vast array of weapons, vehicles and animals, players will write their own story across an exotic open-world landscape.

The Far Cry 4 Original Game Soundtrack digital edition will release worldwide on November 4, the limited 2-CD edition will release on December 2 in North America and on December 9 in Europe, and the limited 3-LP edition will release in January 2015.

Far Cry 4 will be available November 18 worldwide for major platforms and Windows PC.

Cliff mentioned this to me in my recent Celluloid Tunes interview, and I was surprised to hear he was doing (or had just done) a videogame. I have no relationship to this game, but it sounds intriguing. If ANYONE can do the sort of static videogame narrative with a lot of intriguing details, it's Martinez.

I'm certainly looking forward to it.

It's a great score. OK, so the album is about 30 minutes too long as it clocks in at 80(!) minutes, but beyond that it has some smokin' tracks. It's been a while since Martinez was this uptempo.

Kinda silly to complain about a video game album being too long. Good percentage of video games have far more music than any film. It's like complaining that a TV series set is 4 discs or something.

Not silly at all. An album is an album. Doesn't matter how much music there is in the 'source'. The challenge is to present it as succinctly and fluidly as possible. And yes, I feel the same about TV series albums (unless it is anthology things like YOUNG INDY or AMAZING STORIES).

I still feel Gustavo Santoalala has the finest score for a video game with The Last of Us. However I yet to see how well Martinez's effort works in the game.

Carefully edited album format is my preferred experience. A suite recorded at the time of the OST performance is always welcome.

Excellent! I too have argued that what Santoalala achieved with The Last of Us is far beyond what any previous naysayer of the composer could even fathom. Not only is it a beautiful listen, but within the video game it shines brightly. A truly unique experience. Then again, I have never been against Mr. Santoalala and find his music to be extraordinary.

Now back to Martinez. I just got this one yesterday, and haven't had a second to listen to much but during my listens last week on Spotify I was definitely along with the fun ride which Cliff has in store. More later!
