Film Music Reporter is, uh, reporting that Zimmer will, along with Junkie XL, be scoring the new MAN OF STEEL sequel-cum-BATMAN reboot-cum-DC sees Marvel printing money thinks it's good to get on that train.

In an interview with Comic Book Resource, Zimmer essentially said that he would be scoring for Superman and Junkie XL would be scoring for Batman.

No word on who will be scoring appearances by Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Lex Luthor, and Ted from craft services.

Wow that's hilarious. Zimmer certainly has taken as step down from collaborating with Newton Howard on the first two Bale Batmans...I'm guessing there will be absolutely nothing in this score for me (I mainly only liked the few Newton Howard bits in those earlier scores, anyway).

Sigh. Another great superhero score opportunity wasted. I could list at least 30 living composers I'd be super-excited about if they were scoring this film, but of course Hans Zimmer is not even near that list.

Mr. Zimmer should stick to smaller films, like Spanglish, where his melodic gift can shine and his gimmicks and press stunts can't. Plus, he is less likely to make a smaller orchestra sound like crap than a larger one, for some reason...he almost always makes big orchestras sound like they're composed of fake synth instruments.

Let's put this in some context:

Are you doing a different take on Batman, or drawing from your established theme, or something else?

Zimmer: You know something? I have agonized over it. I agonized over it, so much so that finally, I went, I don’t want to betray what Chris, James Newton Howard and I did. And so I asked Zack [Snyder] if it would be OK if I called a friend in. And I’m going to be working with Junkie XL, who really is a great friend. He just finished the Mad Max score. I said to him, “You take care of Batman. I’ll do the other guy.” And Zack loved that idea. It’s a way out.

Sigh. He agonized over Man of Steel, and (perhaps in a different way) Pearl Harbor. My expectations are veeeeery low. God if only Lolita Ritmanis or one of Shirley Walker's other talented protégés got a gig like this instead of being stuck using synths and samples scoring kid's TV shows on a low budget...

...

That pretty much says it all, don't it?

I could be well out of the loop here, but I've never even heard of 'Junkie XL'.

Very excited! Of course I am always on board for anything Zimmer, and indeed I loved his Man of Steel tunes, but I have also been enjoying Junkie XL's music too -- a lot of Divergent is terrific and Paranoia is very energetic. He doesn't always shine and some of his music suffers, but he's a new composer, so I don't expect him to be polished and seasoned. He's very good for the amount of work he's done so far.

Sure I would prefer Zimmer with JNH but that can't always be. Nor, in this case, and thanks for the context by Mastadge, can it be just Zimmer. Dawn of Justice's score won't be for everyone but I am definitely looking forward to it.

Not so much a step down, more like jumping off the top of Angel Falls.

Don't let Hans hear you say these things. He'll go off on you.

Seriously.

You're talking about that exchange on facebook two weeks ago right? Heard about it...I really want to see a screen-cap of that wink

Mr. Zimmer should stick to smaller films...

THIS statement is hilarious and totally questionable.
HZ haters please take that exit.

Agreed. Zimmer has written many excellent scores for huge films (The Rock, Gladiator, Mission: Impossible 2, The Last Samurai, King Arthur, Batman Begins to name but a few). Besides, where do you think the money is? If Zimmer can get these major projects and do what he loves (and do it well) and earn a nice paycheck while doing it, who are you or anyone else to tell him he should be doing little projects?

As someone who actually enjoyed Man of Steel, I'm looking forward to hearing Zimmer return to and expand upon his Superman themes. Like others, I would have preferred to hear Zimmer say he would be turning over Batman scoring duties to, say, James Newton Howard instead of Junkie XL, but let's wait another 16 or so months to see how their music plays out.

Agreed with your above statement as well.

But only IF he had stuck with THAT approach then his so called "contemporary music" could mean something.

Zimmer haters tend to think they know everything about what is good film music and what is bad. But they clearly don't. If you love Zimmer, you're an asshole. If you love Zimmer AND traditional symphonic film music, you deserve to be executed because it's treason. IMHO they are stuck in their old listening tastes and don't want to hear anything but symphonic. And they are frequently more into classical music than in rock'n'roll or pop music, when they don't simply hate rock and pop. It tells a lot about their reactionary way of thinking.
I adore Rozsa or Williams. I also adore Junkie's 300 and his score for Divergent was really cool in melodic and rythmic terms. Junkie and Hans are the perfect team for the new Snyder epic.

I’ve wondered about that myself recently. One look at the ‘Now Playing (non film music)’ thread, myself and a few others would frequently post the pop and rock music we are listening to, several others just constantly post classical stuff. It's all a bit precious.

Junk is junk regardless of when it was recorded and by whom. It has nothing to do with us old timers not getting it. There's a lot of wonderful classical music and a lot of awful classical music. Zimmer had a great modern style in the 90's, today he is doing unlistenable junk.

Oh for Pete's sake, people.

Man Of Steel is an excellent score and album. Just not what everyone wants for a Superman score. And it was tied to a terrible, terrible movie.

Would I have loved a more traditional orchestral score? Sure. John Debney, if allowed to go full out thematic, would have hit a home run. Joel McNeely.

For as much shit as it took from the cranky crowd, Ottman's Superman Returns was a fabulous Superman score.

People are auto-tuned to have knee jerk reactions if Superman or Star Wars doesn't have the name John Williams attached to it.

This new movie doesn't fill me with hope but I look forward to hearing what Zimmer does. This Junky person not so much razz
