Premiere release of knockout score by Peter Bernstein for Jonathan Betuel adventure/fantasy with John Stockwell, Fisher Stevens, Dennis Hopper. Movie was an early effort from Disney's then-new Touchstone division, aimed at teen market. Special effects are name of the game, with everything from UFO's to dinosaurs all getting their say in the name of high school science. Peter Bernstein draws inspiration from fast pace, exciting set pieces, creates major-league symphonic score that propels the action. In balance are crisp high tech sequences for keyboards, electronics that anchor everything else in the hip world of 1985. There are numerous highlights but several rousing action cues take front and center. Also included is punchy end credit number "My Science Project", performed by The Tubes. Several extras round out nice package. Entire CD mastered in dynamic stereo from multi-channel session masters preserved in pristine condition in Disney vaults. 1985 saw numerous fantastic movies aimed at video game-era teens, many with supercharged scores in tow: Back To The Future, Explorers, Real Genius, others. At last, Peter Bernstein has his day! Peter Bernstein conducts. Intrada Special Collection CD available while quantities and interest remain!

I remember enjoying the score when I saw the film on cable a million years ago. Great to see this forgotten little gem from Intrada!

There seems to be a tiny glitch in track 12 at 2:22... or 14 - 2:56
is it on everyone's copy?

Can't recommend this one enough. My favorite Peter Bernstein score - a massive work, gorgeously orchestrated and wonderfully performed, with a great love theme (heard in its full glory in the terrific cue "Stop It" - and it's worth noting that this particular statement of the love theme didn't make it into the final film, so this CD is the only way to hear it).

I'm hoping the mods allow this. I started an account just to discuss this CD.

UK based. Huge fan of this film (own VHS, DVD and BD). I saw the CD at the time and wanted it, but figured it was just a disc with cheap paper sheet for the cover, so kept putting it off.

Now it's on eBay for £150 a time. Some foreign sellers have it for less, but postage puts it up to around the £120 mark. I regret not buying it at the time!

And then I discover it actually has a booklet with interview quotes! One of the eBay auctions had photos of the booklet, and I was like: OMG IT HAS INTERVIEW QUOTES!!!

Does anyone know of a store online selling it for a reasonable price?

I don't even want the music CD, I just want to know what's in that booklet!

Alternatively, can someone who bought it please describe the booklet? How many pages, how much interview material is actually inside, etc.

I hoped maybe the booklet would be available on the Internet Archive. No such luck. Now here's the dangerous request: can someone snap a photo of the interview quotes in the booklet?

I'm not asking for bootlegs, or MP3s, or piracy. I just want to know what was said in that booklet. I just want to know the words, man.

I have been trying to research this film for years, and it keeps bringing up little mysteries. I even emailed Peter Bernstein.

For example:

There's a song about 42 minutes into the film, where Michael phones Ellie, which is missing from this OST CD (2014). The title theme was by the music band The Tubes, and according to IMDB they recorded two songs for the film, the other being Hard to Believe. I actually emailed the film's composer Peter Bernstein about this. The song for My Science Project is actually a cover of Hard to Believe by Steeplechase, from 1981. Bernstein was producer on both. The cover version, made for the film, has never be publicly released in full. Sadly despite emailing a few times over the years, the file couldn't be found.

Peter Bernstein: "Interesting that the song, Hard To Believe, caught your attention. It was one of my favourites from that film. I did co-write and produce the song that The Tubes performed. I will go to my archives and see if I can find file of the song. If I can I will be glad to send you an MP3."

Sadly he never found it.

So this CD isn't even a complete CD, it's missing that one song by The Tubes, Hard to Believe. The Steeplechase original is on YouTube - you can listen to it and watch the part of the film, and see it's the same song by different bands.

Anyway...

That mysterious booklet.

Please enlighten me as to what's in it. smile

Many thanks.

It looks like the archive website MusicBrainz has an upload of the booklet.

I'm not sure if this is an "unmentionable" website, but I seem to recall it being associated with the Internet Archive.

Thank you kind poster - this is glorious. GLORIOUS!

It turns out there's quite a lot of information on the making of the film. Really sad now that I didn't get it when I had the chance - I shall keep eyes open vigilantly should one come up. In the meantime, I shall enjoy reading these words and viewing the archive photo they included of the dino.

Again, my sincerest thanks for helping me out. smile

EDIT:
Page 10 mentions two songs performed by The Tubes.

The one is obviously the famous title song. But the other is "Hard to Believe", a cover of the song previously by Steeplechase, of which it has never been made public.

I have my own theories as to why... But no evidence. (Given Bernstein wrote and produced the Steeplechase version, I wonder if he actually had the rights to re-use the song for the film? Just personal speculation.)

Here's the 1981 original:

If you pop to around 42 minutes in the film, you can hear a couple lines as performed by The Tubes.

There's a seller on Discogs in Japan with a copy that comes to £43 including postage to the UK. Not cheap, but still a bit better than the figures you mention.
