When it's movies based on classic literature, such as "Jane Eyre" or "Wuthering Heights", I'll give them a pass because it can be refreshing to see the book reinterpreted. And it's been more than 20 years since the last filmed version, not exactly a short amount of time in the film world seeing as how "Spiderman" was rebooted in less time.

I like him. I think he's an exciting young actor. His versatility allows him to portray good guys (Die Hard 5) and bad guys (Divergent, Jack Reacher) convincincly. I think he has more charisma than a lot of popular and working actors his age.

Why do people still give Shyamalan money to make movies? The dude's BOX OFFICE POISON by now, and people literally laugh when they see his name in movie trailers (which is why it was conspicuously absent from all of the advertising for last year's After Earth).

Why do people still give Shyamalan money to make movies?

Its funny you ask this. A couple of months (or a year?) ago, Shyamalan was attached to helm a television show that sounded exactly like Twin Peaks. The description was something like "A FBI agent enters a small town to search for a missing person and finds so many more mysterious things".

Now, that project (I can't remember the name, but it was even reported in this "announcement threads") has seemingly disappeared from mention, from history! a while before Lynch said he was going to do a new season of Twin Peaks.

Now, personally, I think there is a suspicious thing going on with Hollywood. Theres a couple of "gatekeeper producers" at the helm. JJ Abrams has the Star Trek and Star Wars market, that godawful ass Judd Apatow is behind every comedy film lately, Chris Nolan has free-reign on the... fare he makes and Joss Whedon is helming comic book stuff.

Its like there are a handful of people slicing up this big old pie for themselves... and its making each genre totally stagnant. There are no DC movies that don't ape Nolan's approach, there are no franchise scifi without Abrams creatively bankrupt drool all over it... I get that I'm a curmudgeon and that they're not making movies "for me" but goddamn, I'd like to see a trailer without saying "Oh, someone is copying Inception *again*".

Isn't he still a box-office draw internationally? I was under the impression that once foreign revenues were added in, his movies still mostly make money...

Yes, to my understanding, his movies still make money and turn enough profit to keep him employed. No staggering successes, no word of mouth runaway hits, but no box office poison by any means. Critical poison, yeah maybe.
