oh yes, everyone loves a Kid bore - invariably competitive parents who wanna outdo each other!! weather bores are my favourite - "...vis a vis the weather front moving in from the north north east should be with us by midday and the forecast predicts a light coating of rain similar to yesterday but possibly a few degrees colder..." etc.

Yes, definitely 'kid'/baby issues. Also, cars. Unfortunately, several of my friends are interested in cars, but I can hardly think of a more boring topic. I've never owned one, have no interest in one and for me it's just a means of transportation between A and B. That is because you are not an American Thor. Everyone, almost everyone here, drives a car, a lot of people love a car, or dream of some car. Kids draw cars, race little cars and want big cars, and we spend a lot on cars. Cars are part and parcel, oddly perhaps, with that whole sense of personal freedom thing. Now personally I will never spend the ridiculous amounts of money that people do on a new car, it is one of the worst money decisions. Nor do understand the need for a 500 hp Mercedes, or a 700 hp Dodge Charger. That kind of power is entirely unusable in driving on our public roads unless you are planning on committing a crime. Nor do I understand why anyone wants to drop $40k on a BMW that is a copy of thousands of others on the road. The amount of money that Americans will spend for 6 years in the future on a unremarkable and boring car is really strange to me. I drive an 18 year old Vintage Volvo turbo.

For me it's conversations or writings about comic book superheros or their films, TV etc. Yes, that's it. The whole Christopher Nolan/Hollywood thing has forced the entire "costumed hero" thing over the shark and, I hope, is discrediting it for all time. A cinematic "superhero" adaptation should be rare and thoroughly vetted by some auteur who can bring a fun and serious sensibility to it. That's why the Nolan stuff worked and no one else's has.

THAT interests me, btw (discussing the environment). But types of cars and machinery and gadgets and power and equipment....God, I get sleepy just thinking about it.

I largely agree with you, but I gotta tell you I have talked to my car, probably a lot of lunk-headed American guys do. Pardon, as I get serious just a moment; But as I recently drove to my father's funeral, over hills and through trees I was listening to Jerry Goldsmith and the solidity, tranquility and privacy of my car and Jerry helped me in some way, gave me a space to work though some feelings slowly, as I had to drive about 90 minutes. A car, like a favorite composer for a lot of us, is sort of a companion, much more for guys I am pretty sure. And for some of us the car might be one of the very few private spaces we have, and moreover one of the few private places to listen to what we want and whatever volume we want. - earbuds simply do not count

Sorry, but that is a ridiculous us statement (apologies if it was meant tongue-in-cheek). I have a Supercharged Jag XKR which delivers 520 BHP and IT is totally usable on public roads for daily travel, without committing crimes. I drive an 18 year old Vintage Volvo turbo. Oh I see, it WAS tongue-in-cheek - you obviously don't know anything about cars at all! Yeah yeah Mike, you have a very nice car. That is a silly amount of horsepower.what I am getting at is that for most citizens the maximum speed is around 80 to 85 mph, the basic economy car goes 120mph. Most sedans are now 0-60 in 8 to 10 seconds. I really do not understand the need for 0-60 in 4 seconds, what is the point? I mean, I can kick in my 18 year old turbo and zoom ahead of anything in my way, no problem. So I am very happy with my Volvo.

I think it's a status symbol thing. Just like an expensive watch, or my son is a Doctor, my Gf is a model, etc. Edit: I worked for a guy who purchased a $600,000 dollar car and showed it off at work. He said he wasn't keeping it. Just wanted to show it off, and planned to sell it within six months.
