He was a controversial producer, given the name Glen Larceny, for creating TV knock-offs of popular feature films

Battlestar Galactica was atrocious. And yeah, the guy was a major plagiarist.

Sure it road on the heels of Star Wars, but it actually had an original story, cool hardware, and a fabulous score. Other than Han Solo/Starbuck comparisons there are none.

BTW watch Fighting Devil Dogs if you want to know where Darth Vadar came from.

The only person who can be accused of plagiarism regarding Galactica is a certain Moore-ron.

RIP, Glen and thanks.

Ron Moore took everything wrong with TOS and reimagined it into an adult series that matched the weight of the original story. The mini series and first season in particular were compelling television. Things went downhill somewhere in its second season.

Ah, Magnum, P.I., one of the best things to come from the '80s. As mentioned, though, we have Bellisario to thank more, who went on to create the magnificent Quantum Leap, which is one of the best things to exist in the '90s.

And the magnificent Troian Bellisario, but that's another thread. smile

Back to Larson, however - at least he was more hands-on than J.J. Abrams (and usually stuck around on his shows longer). And the theme tunes he wrote actually tended to be, you know, tunes.

Larson, in talking about Switch, once made the point that he was very well aware that some episodes were very intelligently written and some weren't. Rather than pleading lack of time or resources, Larson said it was intentional. He believed that audiences liked smart stories, but in limited quantities, and that they appreciated the variation. I don't know whether I agree or if that view is terribly cynical, but I thought it was interesting to hear that Larson was very conscious of what he was doing.

The evidence does tend to support his theory, cynicism or no.

The original BATTLESTAR GALACTICA is great TV and there was no "theft" involved.

The success of STAR WARS influenced BG, but far less than BEWITCHED influenced I DREAM OF JEANIE, and far less than REMINGTON STEELE influenced MOONLIGHTING. In that context, BG was wholly and dazzlingly original.
