Holiday concerts abound this time of year with traditional Christmas cheer but the Golden State Pops has always stood out by having predominantly Christmassy film music. Over the years, culminating right up to last year's premiere of Bernard Herrmann's A CHRISTMAS CAROL, there have been a series of debuts of Xmas movie scores. This year Bruce Broughton and John Debney join Steven Allen Fox for the premiere of CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS, plus ELF, MIRICLE ON 34TH STREET(1994), HOME ALONE, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, POLAR EXPRESS and many more. Also traditional Christmas tunes in between. AND Shoshona Bean (who was on Broadway in both WICKED and HAIRSPRAY) will add to the merriment singing from FROZEN and more!

Most pops orchestras present nice evenings of holiday music. Steven Allen Fox and his Golden State Pops orchestra tends to want to knock your socks off. He tries harder.

Ask anyone who has been there.

I cannot make it but wish I could...(I live in Australia). Anyone who might be wavering due to their uncertainty over the quality of the GSPO orchestra should read my review of last year's Halloween Concert here...(oh and watch the video): http://thecinemacafe.com/the-cinema-treasure-hunter/2013/12/2/treasured-appearances-3-varese-sarabande-35th-anniversary-halloween-gala

Golden State Pops Orchestra's Dec. 20 Holiday Concert will feature singer SHOSHANA BEAN singing "LET IT GO" from the movie "FROZEN." Ms. Bean was the very first replacement for IDINA MENZEL in the role of Elphaba in "WICKED" on Broadway, and also starred in the original Broadway cast of "HAIRSPRAY."

Tickets and more information are available at www.facebook.com/events/1560717374142692/

Shoshana Bean’s independent solo releases have topped the iTunes R&B and Blues charts in the US and UK in peak positions 5, 3 and now #1 with the release of her latest single “Runaway Train." She starred opposite Holly Madison in the Las Vegas burlesque review "Peepshow," and co-wrote and starred in an original musical, "Dear John Mayer," which made it's debut in Los Angeles in 2011. She has performed alongside Michael Jackson, Brian McKnight, Bebe Winans, and arranged vocals for Jennifer Lopez's American Idol performance of “I Luh Ya Papi.” Her music has been featured in shows on MTV, Showtime, Oxygen and NBC and her debut album "Superhero" won her an Independent Music Award for best R&B song.

I see Clare Snodgrass, from last year's Herrmann Xmas Carol, will be singing "When You Believe" so THE PRINCE OF EGYPT is added.

Clare Snodgrass is singing "It's A Wonderful Life" which is a surprise for me.

I never knew they added lyrics to Dimitri Tiomkin's music but they did.

I learn something every day!

Dear Morricone,

If you weren't aware of the "Wonderful Life" song, then you may not possess either of two cd's I highly recommend. Or, one CD and one 4 CD box-set. The set came out a few years ago, perhaps on Silva, and it featured re-recorded suites of Tiomkin film scores; Disc 4 was devoted exclusively to his movie songs, including previously unheard ditties such as IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE and, if memory serves, an alternate, unused song for the WILD, WILD WEST TV series.

As to the CD, it's the recent Kritzerland release of IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE itself, which includes the song. Perhaps you've got it, but haven't had time yet to listen to it?

Thanks, as always, for bringing our attention to the superb GSPO and its doings!

I just wanted to make a special plea on how important it is supporting the Golden State Pops Orchestra.

I want to underline that this place not only plays what you would expect in film music but throws in the unexpected EVERY SINGLE TIME. Those who have been there can attest to that. Last year's complete Bernard Herrmann's A CHRISTMAS CAROL was more than a shining example.

So for those who are thinking of attending some local traditional Christmas Concert know that:

Steven Allen Fox and the GSPO dedicate at least 20% of there shows to traditional fair in a spectacular manner with a Hallelujah Chorus.

PLUS you get all of the most familiar Xmas film music out there from the likes of John Williams, Dimitri Tiomkin, Bruce Broughton, Alan Silvestri, etc.

AND then we have John Debney for the first time conducting his ELF score and while he is at it doing the premiere of the CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS score. I don't even have this CD and from what I understand there is none of his music on it. So Debney is auditioning the music for me with full orchestra. Those on the FSM board who saw it said the film was beyond awful and his music was dialed WAY down, and yet gave what they heard a thumbs up. So in a sense this is the first time this music REALLY is heard. I have found that practically every offbeat musical piece the GSPO has done has been a delight so the odds are with me.

But EITHER way this is just another example of what Fox & friends come up with that no one else does. They need your support, the mainstream public doesn't care about film music and yet can have their eyes opened by those who do. I've witnessed it.

Indeed I get my Kritzerland CDs in batches and have a tendency to skip some of the bonus cuts if I think they are source cues. I always go back later but this time didn't pick up on that song. Thanks, Preston !

I should mention, due to cutbacks, this year the Golden State Pops Orchestra has it'd smallest season ever - 4 shows. So they have fewer opportunities to bring in income so it is all the more important if you were considering going to add a little push to keep this one and only Los Angeles film music orchestra going, thanks!

Thanks Steven and the GSPO for making the Holiday Pops concert tradition also a film music concert tradition for twelve years!

Hopefully you will resume making a 10th Halloween one next year to bookend it. I miss beginning AND ending the holiday season with the GSPO as we should.

ELOISE AT CHRISTMASTIME would be a very cool Christmas item. If everything goes well at tomorrow's concert maybe a follow-up next year?
