I would love to go to the GSPO's Holiday Concert some year. Unfortunately, the concert is consistently scheduled the weekend closest to Christmas. That's just a terrible time for my wife and I...no way in heck can we make it. If it could get moved up a weekend or two, great. But to hold it on the 20th...no way.

You'd think that would be the case but If I remember right the GSPO tried early dates a couple times and found when there is a lot of Christmas shopping ahead frivolities, like concerts, are not attended on the chance families might run low on money. So the they have found the closer to Christmas they can get it, the more likely the shopping is over and money for concert tickets is freed. Having been in the movie business most of my life I can attest that the nadir of movie attendance (except for a few key films) is before Christmas and on Christmas day and after it spikes straight up.

Even though the center section is sold out there are still plenty of wonderful walk-up or online tickets available.

I'm heading down there now but here is one more non-film music item I see added:

---- Xmas Favorites from Mannheim Steamroller, including "Stille Nacht" featuing Robert Thies, Pianist, who toured with Mannheim Steamroller.

As usual I head out to the Warner Grand after pushing a concert as much as possible and getting the usual indifference on here (except for those who are on the other side of the world).

I tend to sit down and look at the program and say maybe they are right, this one may be less than stellar. For instance there is "Let It Go" and man, have we had enough of that. Then Shoshana Bean comes out and does this:

...and again Steven Allen Fox proves that when you give 175% any doubts are shot down. Few FSMers were there or film music fans in general but the house was pretty full and the likes of Bruce Broughton and John Debney charged up the auditorium, even though they probably didn't know who they were. There are no throwaway concerts at the GSPO just the majesty of great and original performances. Again I walk out giddy that I had come and the loss was on those who didn't even consider it.

Henry we are all so glad you push the GSPO so much!

I would imagine, especially folks in Los Angeles, with just a few weekends in December and probably NUMEROUS Holiday parties to go to, many had to choose. The GSPO or a couple Holiday parties? The fact is the few of us film score folks that went had a great time and we wish we would have seen more familiar faces, but that is OK, completely OK as we know how busy the Holidays can be! We know as we get closer to Christmas, people's agendas get so so busy so I wasn't too surprised of the fewer film score faces. It was a great concert with some great musical selections. Glad I went and glad Henry is the NUMBER ONE GSPO fan!!

If I still lived in L.A. I would totally be there and I'm so jealous of all the great concerts they've done that I haven't been able to make it to. I remember it was great seeing and hearing them perform!

Hopefully one day I'll live in CA again...

What I loved about this concert as everything the GSPO does is the adherence to the original film.

For instance when I heard they were doing the song version of IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE I was a bit disappointed in that isn't in the film and listening to the version released to records it was straight big band. Well without a doubt the arrangement they found was from Tiomkin with his usual embellishments. He probably did this himself for his own release. I got the Tiomkin sound I was hoping for.

And then when I saw they were doing "When You Believe" from THE PRINCE OF EGYPT I assumed they were doing the Mariah Carey/Whitney Houston pop version that hit the charts. No, they dug up the film version where Bruce Fowler did the orchestrations for Hans Zimmer, including the choral "Ashira" (I will sing) bridge that explodes with symphonic power in that animated version of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS.

Where else do you walk in expecting cheery Xmas songs and end up hearing tons of the film score sounds you dearly love but at the GSPO?

(Oh yeah, they included cheery things too!)

I do miss seeing you over at the Walt Disney Hall store and it's environs.

But unfortunately I believe the reason you left, the economic downturn and work shortage, is still in place. I'd like to have you back too but make sure you have prospects.

Wholeheartedly agree. That's one of the best parts of seeing a GSPO concert. Maestro Fox is to be commended for always keeping this in mind when programming concerts. The GSPO is a treasure.

And thanks to you, kind sir, for always letting us know about the concerts (and your great reviews!)

Thanks Henry. I had prospects and was very happy working for the L.A. Phil, but my wife did have a lot of trouble finding work for over a year (when we arrived in Houston she found new work faster than I did!) My boss at the L.A. Phil told me that if I ever came back to L.A., she had a job waiting for me, but she left the position (I think she retired) about a year ago so who knows who at the organization remembers me and would put in a good word. Of course it's a moot point right now because my wife and I are working to finally get college degrees...over halfway through now but still can't quite see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Oh well, I've had lots of good work opportunities since then...managing Joel's Classical Shop and more recently working for the Santa Fe Opera has been really wonderful. I just miss all the great film music related stuff in L.A., plus my good friend John Morgan in particular, as well as you fine people (and would have loved to have made your better acquaintance, Peter!)

Looks like you made the right moves. Maybe if we get in your neck of the woods I will pay you a visit! The Dallas Symphony used to do some spectacular things. Take care!
