As we approach years end, what NEW scores would you say are sitting at the top of the pile for 2014?
For me, the new stuff that has really stood out and been played the most are;

TARZAN (David Newman) - Sure, it strays into Remote Control land on many occasion, but in Newman's capable hands even that tired sound seems bigger and fuller and there's still plenty of gorgeous Newman strings, piano and choir stuff to keep his fans happy.

MALEFICENT (JNH) - Easily the best score I've heard by JNH in years. Similar to Snow White and the Huntsman at times, but the action licks harken back to his Disney animated style more than the Zimmer/Dark Knight stuff that was starting to take over. The gentle/fantasy stuff is sublime.

COSMOS (Alan Silvestri) - This 4 disc set, running around 170 minutes, could be re-titled Now That's What I Call Alan Silvestri, as he stuffs all his greatest licks from the past 30 years into a tremendous package that shines with wonder and awe. Shame there's no CD version to have and to hold, but I guess this is the future. Still, the music is simply gorgeous.

I have played MONUMENTS MEN by Desplat a great deal this year but I'm not sure if it qualifies as this years or last?

for now:

THE GIVER
SECRET SHARER
THE MONKEY KING - if it will actually ever get released
A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST
THE HOMESMAN
UNE NOUVELLE AMIE
DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
1864

La Belle et la Bete - not sure if this isn't 2013, though
Stalingrad - that one is more likely 2013, isn't it?
Monuments Men - it is indeed 2014. It premiered in February if I remember correctly.
The Pirate Fairy
Test
Stonehearst Asylum

And there is still several more on the way:
SEVENTH SON
ASTERIX: LE DOMAINE DES DIEUX
Imitation Game
Unbroken
Big Eyes

Still a month to go and some pretty exciting things coming up, but I already have a short list of some 30-40 great scores from 2014 that will vye for the Top 10.

To be honest, I've lately been devoting much more of my energy towards exploring older scores and so haven't really been tuned into a lot of what's been released this year. That said, the scores that I did purchase and admire this year are as follows:

1. Interstellar - Hans Zimmer.
2. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Michael Giacchino
3. Automata - Zacharias M. de la Riva
4. The Homesman - Marco Beltrami
5. How to Train Your Dragon 2 - John Powell.

Chris.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 is my entire list. And I’m fine with that.

I will give you 2 titles, because these are the only titles that I have heard this year that I thought were worthy of owning on CD.

How To Train Your Dragon 2 - Powell
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Giacchino

I would love to put COSMOS - Silvestri on the list, but since it is only available as a download, I can not include it.

Out of the 257 scores I've heard/seen this year so far, these make my Top 20 as it stands right now

- BALLET BOYS, Henrik Skram
- THE BOXTROLLS, Dario Marianelli
- FIELD OF LOST SHOES, Fredrik Wiedmann
- GODZILLA, Alexandre Desplat
- THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, Alexandre Desplat
- HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2, John Powell
- THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART I, James Newton Howard
- THE IMITATION GAME, Alexandre Desplat
- INTERSTELLAR, Hans Zimmer
- KUNDO: AGE OF THE RAMPANT, Jo-Yeung Wook
- THE LIBERATOR, Gustavo Dudamel
- MALEFICENT, James Newton Howard
- A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST, Joel McNeely
- THE MONKEY KING, Christopher Young
- THE MONUMENTS MEN, Alexandre Desplat
- NO GOD NO MASTER, Nuno Malo
- THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING, Jóhann Jóhannsson
- UNE NOUVELLE AMIE, Philippe Rombi
- THE UNKNOWN KNOWN, Danny Elfman
- WHEN MARNIE WAS THERE, Takatsuga Muramatsu

although I fully expect THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES (Shore), UNBROKEN (Desplat), and maybe BIG EYES (Elfman) to push their way into contention by year end.

For the record, I also liked CALVARY, DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, HERCULES, THE HOMESMAN, THE IGNORANCE OF BLOOD, KANO, NOAH, SON OF BATMAN, and TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, but not enough to break into my Top 20.

There are also a handful of really good TV scores:

- COSMOS: A SPACE-TIME ODYSSEY, Alan Silvestri
- GAME OF THRONES [SEASON 4], Ramin Djawadi
- ISABEL [SEASON 3], Federico Jusid
- PENNY DREADFUL, Abel Korzeniowski
- SLEEPY HOLLOW [SEASON 2], Brian Tyler and Bob Lydecker

and a half dozen or so really excellent video game scores too:

- ASSASSIN'S CREED: ROGUE, Elitsa Alexandrova
- ASSASSIN'S CREED: UNITY, Chris Tilton and Sarah Schachner
- CASTLEVANIA: LORD OF SHADOWS 2, Oscar Araujo
- CHILD OF LIGHT, Beatrice Martin
- CIVILIZATION: BEYOND EARTH, Geoff Knorr/Michael Curran/Griffin Cohen/Grant Kirkhope
- REVELATION, Neal Acree
- WORLD OF WARCRAFT: WARLORDS OF DRAENOR - Russell Brower/Neal Acree/Clint Bajakian/Sam Cardon/Edo Guidotti/Eimear Noone/Tracy Bush/Craig Stuart Garfinkle/Jason Hayes/Glenn Stafford

It's been a really good year!

Until last week, I can't recall any 2014 scores that I'd want to hear a second time. I'd have been happier not to hear most of them the first time.
But on Friday I heard The Imitation Game and was interested enough to play it again on Saturday.
At this rate, it might well end up as my "Best" of the year, thanks largely to the absence of any competition.

This disinterest, apathy, and occasional outright hostility towards new music just baffles me. It's like some of you actually pride yourselves on being so elitist, that you wouldn't lower yourself to listen to something contemporary.

Reminds me of the attitudes that some classical music snobs have about film music as an entire genre.

I agree with you Jon. Saying Hollywood film music isn't as good on the whole as it used to be is one thing (happens to be an opinion I share).

But saying there's nothing (or hardly anything) good coming out nowadays is just willfully ignorant!

KAPTEIN SABELTANN OG SKATTEN I LAMA RAMA (Johan Söderqvist)

This spans from classical, thematic orchestral music that everybody here loves to more alternative 'indie' approach to electronic music and everything inbetween. All come highly recommended, if you're willing to give things a chance.

Best post of the month. Bravo. You really have nailed it there. Honestly.

And in that vein, since my list isn't finished yet I'll go ahead and put Brian Tyler's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles out there. Tremendous, thematic fun.

NECESSARY ROUGHNESS, LOCK UP and A PRAYER FOR THE DYING. I know they didn't originally come out this year, but they are my favorite cd releases of this year.
