70mm Print! Editor Anne Coates & Film Historian Jeremy Arnold In Person!
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA
Introduction by editor Anne Coates and film historian Jeremy Arnold, author of 'Lawrence of Arabia: The 50th Anniversary.'

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA
1962, Sony Repertory, 216 min, UK / USA, Dir: David Lean
This sweeping epic of Arab infighting and British colonialism won seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor for Peter O’Toole (in his first feature). Director David Lean's masterpiece, lensed to perfection by Freddie Young and set to Maurice Jarre's majestic score is based on the daring campaigns of real-life British military figure T.E. Lawrence during WWI. The amazing cast includes Omar Sharif (in his first major English-speaking role as Sherif Ali), Anthony Quinn, Jack Hawkins, Claude Rains and Alec Guinness as Prince Feisal. Made to be seen on the big screen!

Bump.

If you have never seen this restoration 70mm print - well, you owe yourself the privilege. Only David Lean and Freddie Young could make the desert look this stunning! And, the Jarre score in sublime stereo sound - the drums roar!

And Editor Anne V. Coates!!!

I have to second this.

If you have only seen Lawrence of Arabia on a television screen (HD or not), then you haven't seen it at all. That's not hyperbole, it is the scope of the imagery that can only truly be appreciated projected in 70mm.

argh, I can dream...

Saw this restoration, not in Tinseltown but in my local cinema a few months ago. One showing only. Truth: There was me and one other guy in the theater, and I think he just went in there to sleep. So much for the cul-tcha in Texas. It was incredibly beautiful, and I just thought about all the slugs who were missing it. Loved the movie all over again! I went out and bought the BD of same, which is not the same as seeing it up on the big screen but also pretty impressive.

(Now we're on 3 threads!)

I'm assuming this is the restored thingie that got every critic rhapsodic on both coasts? I saw it in the Ziegfeld Theatre in NYC back then and still marvel over the experience.

I remember seeing the restoration print at the Odeon Marble Arch screening.

Gregory Peck won best actor that year for "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" not Peter O'Toole.
