Has this score ever been available? I can't find it, thought maybe Varese put it out.

You've been on this board for 11 years, I'm sure you can navigate a search engine and/or look at the Varese Wiki page and search within that for key words like IRA or BUCK or UNCLE. OR do a google search for Uncle Buck Ira Newman Varese Sarabande and you would find absolutely NOTHING. We have never put this out and this is un-released sadly. smile

Also maybe put the words in front of your post like "HAS" or a ? at the end as the posting will make ALL think this is available or is coming. We don't want to fool folks in thinking it's coming though maybe you made the post that way in order to get folks to read it and chime in.

Why people put thread titles like this is beyond me

Subject changed.
Back on topic, dmd states it's never been released so guess that answers the question. Thanks.

In a more kinder manner, might I suggest taking the following steps -- this applies to any user -- when curious if something has or has not been released:

  • SEARCH
Do an internet search (Google, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, etc.). For example, if you wanted to know if "Silver Linings Playbook" by Elfman has been released, search like so (using Google for this example):
"Silver Linings Playbook" "Danny Elfman" soundtrack

    The resutls are abondant.

  • DETAILS
Say you want more details. Well, there are sites for that, but one overwhelmingly vastly more comprehensive and is pretty much the go-to site:
    http://www.soundtrackcollector.com

If you can't find it there, chances are it doesn't (legally) exist. Please note, however, that some bootleg titles are listed and some labels that use overseas' laws for other country's property as an excuse to create a grey area bootleg, are also listed.

  • COMPOSERS
Similarly, if you want to see the credits listing of a composer there's soundtrackcollector.com (which has stuff missing from IMDb and obscure things, too), and then there is the Internet Movie Database (IMDb.com).

  • PURCHASE
There are a number of trustworthy legitimate sites from which to purchase scores. There biggest one that's frequented by scores fans, is ScreenArchives.com ("SAE").

All good suggestions. I like soundtrack.net the best.
Back on topic, Ira Newborn seems criminally under represented on disc.

As I continue to work in the soundtrack business I'm told over and over again comedy scores just don't sell so a release of this is unlikely I'm afraid. Now a box set of Ira's music from various films, that would be sweet!

Comedy scores don't sell. Interesting. Maybe that's true, my collection is pretty light. Ghostbusters, Stripes, Midnight Run, Beverly Hills Cop, Tango & Cash, Kuffs, Matinee... After that I'd have to go look.

A few are exceptions of course Beverly Hills Cop. But some if these limited edition comedy scores the numbers aren't that good most of the time. Keep in mind just because you and I own this or that comedy scores is in our collection doesn't mean it sold well. Lately it's not good I'm afraid.

Oh I'm not arguing. I don't own much myself I guess. Didn't even buy Trading Places. It just seems strange the genre would get the blame as to why a score doesn't sell.
I tend to blame marketing and promotion for sales failures.

I don't usually see scores as "comedy" or "horror" or what have you. It's a score. It's the movie itself that one would categorize as belonging to whatever genre one wished. Unless it was deliberately composed in an exaggeratedly cliched fashion to begin with, I mean.

For example, take "Stripes". It's a bloody funny movie, but Bernstein's music plays it absolutely straight as an arrow, as though it were a serious army flick. I think the ironic juxtaposition makes the whole package all the funnier, but you couldn't say the music itself was "comedy music".

Could the same be said for "Uncle Buck"? I don't know. I'm not even sure how much actual Newborn "score" is in that one. Does anyone here have an actual accounting? I'd be curious to know.

I still hope we get some more Ira Newborn one day, specifically a remastered/expanded Dragnet and Planes, Trains and Automobiles (with the songs).

And I believe MV said that more Police Academy was in the cards but most likely not till 2016 (bigger fish to fry at WB first).

Uncle Buck you have have to include songs and who knows if the people who have the rights to those would play fair so that a label could release it.

I don't think marketing is to blame for a score album not doing good as, not to mention a label, they give the same amount of attention to this score as they do to a comedy score and often times the comedy score just doesn't sell good. People tend to remember the jokes not the music in comedy films for some reason.

Beverly Hills Cop by the way sold great as because of the songs, that was an almost complete SONG album.

In general they tend to sell less and that has nothing to do with marketing or a label not advertising a title enough etc.

Exceptions to the rule was Stripes which had that great march. In general most don't do as good as other genres.

I have a few comedy scores I'd LOVE to try to get out through Varese, but I'm being shot down constantly as the fact is, they don't sell as good. Very true and very sad frown

Now saying this, I would EASILY buy any type of Ira Newborn box set smile

Well I think that's it. For Uncle Buck, I'd want the score and songs. But songs aren't generally on a score collector's wish list. And licensing costs of a score + song release I assume are far too prohibitive for the collector labels. So maybe comedy score buyer and score collector are two different mostly mutually exclusive sets of people.

DMD, do you have any specific examples of comedy scores that undersold.
