I'm enjoying FWTBT, which arrived on my doorstep today, as I read through this thread. The sound is terrific, and even though it's a rerecording, there was no one who knew his way around a film score better than Ray Heindorf. The recording is crisp, the tempo lively and instrumental performances are balanced and clearly audible individually. I've never heard the Stanyan release, but it's hard to imagine a recording of this age sounding any better than this new release. Varese and all concerned deserve great credit for putting it together for us. Looking forward to more of Victor Young in the future!

Here, here, and ditto. I've never even seen the film, but I'm struck by Victor Young's melodies. There is something so powerful and emotive, they pierce the heart, punch you in the gut, and grab you by the throat. It's just a thrilling, romantic score. Beautiful stuff. I can see why it's been so revered. Very grateful to Varèse for making this available, Heindorf or not. Grab it while you can.

I agree with your comments. Victor Young's style always hit me just the right way. I've been a fan since 1956 when my older brother Joe bought Around the World in 80 days!

Less than 200 left! I think it will sell out in due time. I'm enjoying the CD and I'm glad others are too. I hope this will encourage more Victor Young CDs.

It's a pleasure to see that Victor Young's score gained so strong enthusiasm, after decades. My copy is still coming and I don't know what master Varese used, but if it is Stanyan's, you have to think that the Warner Bros. one is even better. Decidedly more presence and prominence in instruments as guitar, flute, percussions section, that were rather obscured and layered at second level, in the Stanyan remastering. If you have those items and listen to old tracks as n.2 (Climb to the cave) or n.9 (Bridge is blown), you will hear solo guitar placed just in front of you, and hails of drums that sounds sharp and well-defined like bullets of a machine-gun. The same happens for the SPELLBOUND recording. About "Heindorf or not" (!): Ray Heindorf's full renditions of those scores (including the Dean's films) were Holy Grails when the original sessions were not intended for the public.

Out of all the fine releases this Christmas, this one is the standout surprise for me. I don't have many Victor Young albums and hadn't heard this one before so it was a blind buy and thank goodness I did. A beautiful, moving score with a wonderful (to me) sound. Here's to more Golden Age releases in 2015.

Agreed! A lovely score and the sound totally pops. Sounds great.

This is a magnificent score that should have been "academy rewarded " in 1943. The work done in bringing the sound quality up to today's standards is truly amazing. I hope Kritzerland will follow this Varese release of Victor Young with its own release of Victor Young "magic" in the next few weeks.

Too bad, FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS was up against another magnificent score in 1943, THE SONG OF BERNADETTE.

If this is your first Victor Young score, then among many others you have missed SHANE and AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS.

I agree with your very insightful comments Cody! Any guy who admires Victor Young can't be all bad! smile

My older brother Joe bought Around the World in 80 Days in 1956, but I had to wait over 50 years for SHANE!

Yes, this is the one to buy. It's the expanded version and has a nice booklet too.

I've read that the 1956 Decca LP was meant to be a two LP set, or a volume 2 was to be issued. It never was. The expanded CD has some wonderful music not on the LP including the western music.
At $16.95 that's a great price too. Hope you buy it and let us know how you like it. smile

Although the old soundtrack release from Varese is in poor sound (from acetates), it's worth watching the western "Johnny Guitar" for its excellent Victor Young score. Actually, it's worth seeing that film for lots of fun reasons, not least the Basil Rathbone-worthy performance of villainess Mercedes McCambridge.

I agree Basil, Johnny Guitar is an excellent and very unusual film. A fine Victor Young score. I think the CD sounds pretty good, we are lucky to have it along with Young's great score to Rio Grande.

Mercedes McCambridge is excellent in the film, and ......... scary! eek

(If she calls, tell her I'm not home!)

This recording has been on repeated rotation around here. What a treat. Great, rich variety of flavors and the track "Maria" is worth the price alone (IMHO). I love this release.

Fewer than 60 copies remaining at Varèse.

Other Victor Young scores out there are Scaramouche from FSM, which is in mono and not the best sound but enjoyable. I got that one on a clearance sale. Also Strategic Air Command from Kritzerland. Not sure if that one sold out. But yet Shane is a must-buy if you enjoy this one. Such a lovely score.
