It'd be funny if no one responded to this thread.

I missed the original post, but it seems like it was interesting if I'm understanding the title correctly. If it was Shaun's comment that made you delete it, then I suggest getting thicker skin.

Based on the thread title (and it's a good idea for a thread), I'd say Interstellar for me. I've been so underwhelmed by so much of Zimmer's work, especially lately, but this score I found to be very powerful and effective in the film. Best use of organ for space travel since Goldsmith's Star Trek: The Motion Picture?

Could be. But there's also Morricone's MISSION TO MARS. And also 2001 and SOLARIS if you go further back.

It's okay... the original post was far too long and rambling, but yeah, I was wondering what everyone's most surprising releases were for the year. Not just new film scores but ANY releases, vintage, etc...

The List of Adrian Messenger!

Good pick! That almost made my list. For the record, the list I came up with was:

1. Interstellar
2. Automata
3. Themes from General Electric Theatre
4. Sounder / Decision for Chemistry
5. Rio Conchos
6. La Revolution Francaise
7. For Whom the Bell Tolls
8. Can't remember what I had here!
9. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
10. Battle of the Five Armies

See No Evil is probably the most pleasant surprise for me. I've been wanting that for a long time, but it was one of many Columbia scores of its era to have missing tapes. Not only were master tapes located, but they sound flawless, too.

Then there is the recording of The Betsy.

I agree about Adrian Messenger and Kritzerland's stereo release of Rio Conchos. Oh, and a Dave Grusin release is always a pleasant surprise these days, so I'll add Falling in Love.

I was just listening to it this morning; Michael Small's CHILD'S PLAY from Intrada. For me it was a discovery on the level of EYE OF THE DEVIL.

Everyone goes on about Mission to Mars in the context of Interstellar but I don't hear it. Morricone was using the organ directly for suspense - it's only in one scene, isn't it, the Tim Robbins-in-space one? But Zimmer's using it for grandeur, maybe some religioso aspect.

I read your original post and enjoyed it! Not a waste, a refreshing burst of positivity! I was trying to think of my own list.

My most pleasant surprise is probably Interstellar. I appreciate what Zimmer's done for Nolan's movies before, but this is the first one that I've genuinely enjoyed. I found it an inspired, moving work for a fascinating (if not just a tad ridiculous) movie. Certainly my biggest film music surprise since Daft Punk knocked it out of the park with Tron Legacy. I was also pleasantly surprised to learn that Silvestri was scoring the Cosmos miniseries, though in that case I wasn't quite as enthused with the end result.

The first choice I thought was Intrada releasing Psycho 2. I don't know if anyone saw this one coming.

Rio Conchos
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Thunderbirds Are Go
Passion Of The Christ

Best releases of the year for me.

Psycho II was the biggest surprise for me also. Intrada had revealed that YSH was comming out that week and when I entered the site to check the samples there it was Psycho II, one of my top grails. I remember it took several very long weeks before receiving mine in Brazil.
