JOBS? Seriously, help me out with this one. I am wondering.

From employers. ;-)

More seriously though, you read enough interviews and talk to enough composers, and you find they typically get jobs some of these ways:
  • He or she sent a demo tape in to get the job, and got called back.
I remember one funny story where the composer laid claim to a tape that was not his, and he got the job.

  • They knew the director or one of the producers, from college or university days, and the composer's name was brought up. This also leads to future assignments from simply knowing the guy.

  • One of the producers on the film worked with the composer on another film, and suggests the composer to the other producers and the director.

  • The music editor may even suggest a composer.

  • The composer gets called up because a producer or director saw some movie, no matter how obscure, that he scored, and wants to hire him.

  • An agency sends out demos in hopes to get one of their represented composers work.

  • The composer hired for the film ends up not doing it, for various reasons, and suggests a replacement composer.

  • And the worst that happens way to often these days: you aren't hired for your talent or abilities. You scofred some piece of shit action film and the producers are making a similar piece of shit action film and know you can do it. They also typically know jack squat about music, even if not their first film.

I'd like to add another unfortunate angle to Justin's list: The 'Music Supervisor' tells the director and producer what kind of music their film needs, and the former listen, knowing nothing whatsoever about music and knowing only that they want it to sound like whatever flavor of the month film scoring sounds like.
