Barry took a correspondence course with Bill Russo, one of Stan Kenton's composer/arrangers. The Kenton sound utilized 5 trumpets, 5 trombones, one being a bass trombone, or 4 trombones and a tuba. I think that is where Barry learned a lot about brass writing.
As an attending high schooler among many that day in the early 70s, the Kenton orchestra did a full-fledged clinic with several stage bands. At one point, the players split into the various sections and went into separate classrooms. I sat in with the Kenton saxes (played tenor in them days). In the evening, the orchestra put on a concert with Kenton at the piano. Ever since, their Here's That Rainy Day is indelible in m'mind's ear and eye.
You've got that brass business down pat. Thank you for relating the influence on Barry.

Depending on what year you went to the clinic, you may have had a theory class with Phil Rizzo who was my teacher.
