I wonder if "How to train your Dragon 2" is not included deliberately, maybe was even considered, or was somehow forgotten.
One of the best crafted scores in years in my book with sweeping inspired themes and an old school leitmotific approach using that themes brillantly.
Because of that the score is one of the most emotional and also most sophisticated, really outstanding and exceptional.

There are thematic scores, still, but they don't have thematic and motific strings in the fabric of the music the way Powell is able to compose (and gets the opportunity here).

Probably it is not included because part 1 was so acclaimed already and now the sequel of an animation?

Anyway, there are sooo few scores in the last years I return to, I think less than 10, maybe even less than 5. HTTYD 2 is one of them.

The scores that seem to be getting the most "buzz" (at least, from what I've read on various predictions sites):

Unbroken
The Theory of Everything
Interstellar
Birdman
The Imitation Game
Gone Girl

Anyone here see all of these films? Any one score in particular stand out for you?

However, these scores have gotten some attention as well and can't be counted out (for industry/critics' circle awards):

Fury (winners of previous year Academy Award often being repeat nominees)
Maleficent
Nightcrawler
The Grand Budapest Hotel
How to Train Your Dragon 2
Exodus: Gods and Kings
The Homesman
Under the Skin
The Judge
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Selma
Snowpiercer
Godzilla

What would you add to these titles?

Despite Desplat's pretty stellar 2014, I still think The Grand Budapest Hotel should be the score that gets him the nomination. It adds so much color to an already fun film.

Hi Mike, I did consider it. Unfortunately, I'm not a big fan of Dragon 2, though it's music was very good. But very much like the original, and I always try to go for originality in my considerations.

I could have easily put Budapest in there Shaun, along with just about every other excellent score Alexandre did this year. But Imitation Game was the winner for me (and certainly good enough for the Golden Globes). I've got a personal rule about keeping it to a singular work of one composer per list to give other people the opportunity to be included. So you could definitely consider Marco Beltrami's Homesman, James Newtown Howard's Malefiecent (or Mockingjay) to be honorary members of my list.

In any case, my picks are my opinion, and as valid as any other soundtrack fan's for what they consider their favorite works this year.

Thanks again to everyone for reading. It's definitely the column I look forward to putting together every year.

That automatically makes the list not the best scores of 2014.

Yes it is true, all about opinion and I have to admit I did not see all of the films you listed.

Maybe, if it is that clear for you, Daniel, not to try to assemble a list which is more objective, not only from an individual point of view, to call it "My best scores of 2014" or "D. S. 's list of best scores in 2014"?
That would show it is your opinion which is as good as anybody else's.

HTTYT 2's music btw in my book is more original, even as a sequel, than all of the films from your list I saw.
Maybe there are one or two you can't compare with, apples and oranges in a way,
but you said you did not like it, which I understand.

No Interstellar?

what I am interested in, Daniel, with so many scores on your desk and all, do you have time to let it happen to return to a recent score after it was released and you listened to it first time? And which scores would that be?

Hi Mike, I appreciate your question. It's a site that I'm proud to be attached to, and I stand for its editorial viewpoint as the soundtrack editor, much in the same way Harry Knowles stands for Aint It Cool, etc.

I appreciate how much you, and everyone loved Dragon 2. But again, it just didn't do it for me. The music was very nice, and also very similar to the first, way superior film. And dare I say score.

Interstellar is very good, but I felt stronger about my other choices.

I get a ton of material to listen to. But I only include entries on this list when I see how the score plays in conjunction with the movie, as opposed to basing it solely on the music alone. It's got to work together. Hence while a score like Under the Skin might send some people running as a sole listen, I thought it worked quite brilliantly in the film, and is the most truly original score I've heard in years.

And yes, with lots to listen to, I've re-visited several scores more than once, especially those on this list. But I'd have to say Snowpiercer holds the record number of listens for me.

A criterium that gets overlooked a lot of the time! Interesting list Daniel, will check out your picks.

Hi Daniel, thanks for the answers,
I think it is great to be able to listen to so much music and have an overview of the scene the way you have,
I am dealing with classical music so much that I appreciate those scores I' ll come back to, I need to come back to, and for example though I am a fan of Giacchino and liked his Apes score when ot came out, I never returned to it.

I 'll have to check out Snowpiercer then, if that is the score which stayed with you the most among all those scores.
