Scores went right down the critics' line. I think this will be very close to what will happen with the Oscars, with Unbroken or Grand Budapest replacing either Interstellar, Gone Girl or Birdman.

Throw Sia in there for the Annie song.

I guess the nominees for best original score this year at Academy Awards are:

Alexandre Desplat for "The Imitation Game"
Hans Zimmer for "Interstellar"
Johann Johannson for "The Theory of Everything"
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for "Gone Girl"
Thomas Newman for "The Judge"

Probably alone in this but I cannot stand John Legend's voice.

I would like to see Desplat win.
Then again, awards and those shows are less relevant than ever.

Would be thrilled to see Newman or Desplat at the Oscars. Newman, especially, deserves to win one.

Trent Reznor, however, really needs to go back to his day job.

I think three of these are likely locks:

The Imitation Game
The Theory of Everything
Gone Girl

Strong bets:

Interstellar

Looks promising:

Unbroken
The Grand Budapest Hotel

Dark horses:

Fury
The Homesman
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Nightcrawler
Maleficent
Birdman
The Judge
Selma

It's crazy that the Oscar nominees could conceivably be ALL Desplat. I don't see The Judge getting a nomination, as much as Newman is their Susan Lucci. Like I wrote in another thread, my wish is that The Grand Budapest Hotel gets the cancel-out-all-others nomination for Desplat.

Whatever wins, I'm fine this year. So long as it's not Birdman. I loved the idea behind the score, but after a while, I was like, "Eh, does this movie need music, let alone constant drumming, at all?"

Have you actually SEEN GONE GIRL or was that just a random cheap shot?

Because Reznor and Ross' music in the film is quite wonderful -- whether it is the satirical, Badalementi/TWIN PEAKS-like music for the diary scenes or that fantastic "wet" sound glissandi playing during the sex scene.

Entirely agree with you.
Hoping the future of scoring is not populated with Junkie XL and Reznor types filling movies with fuzzy noises and synthetic ping pong, doop doops.

How I'd like to see it "go down" come Oscar nom announcement time:

Grand Budapest
The Imitation Game
Theory of Everything
The Homesman
Fury

Yeah, it totally works in the movie. So effective.

In all honesty, Thor, I haven't seen Gone Girl, just listened to the score. The plot didn't interest me in the least. Like many here, I frequently listen to scores without having seen the film, and in those cases can only judge the score based on how it works as a standalone musical work. And this doesn't, for me anyway.

I don't believe this was a "cheap shot" in the least. I also tried my best to wade through the score to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (yes, I listened to all three CD's), and it just about drove me crazy. My comment about Reznor's "day job" simply meant that I felt he was more successful (at least to his fans) in his Rock milieu.

Cheers, and thanks for asking!

I'm listening to Gone Girl right now, as someone who (again) thought the score worked very well in the movie. It's not an easy listen, but you could pick out a great 45-minute album out of this. It's mood music for Tangerine Dream fans and the like. Also great to listen to while reading about the Serial podcast (in lieu of the actual score for that show, which is available on Soundcloud).

Right there with ya, Ado. And no, I'm not on an anti-Rock jihad. As I mentioned in my reply to Thor, there are lots of folks that enjoy Reznor's work, especially with Nine Inch Nails; I'm just not one of them. But I do enjoy Daft Punk (Tron Legacy) and M83 (Oblivion), and admit that this style can work effectively in films. IMHO, Wendy Carlos' work on the original Tron was both beautiful and groundbreaking.

But when I sit down to just listen to a film score, my scope changes. In that case, I'm looking for something more conventional: largely orchestral, with occasional synth assistance (think Goldsmith).

Just my personal preferences, right?

Yeah, Rich, to spin this more positive, when I hear a full orchestral score in a new movie now I am totally thrilled, and it infinitely enriches the movie. We have had some pretty good ones this year thank goodness. The directors that hire the bleep/boop/boop/swish/swish/throb/throb (repeat) scores really do not know what they are robbing themselves of.

And, I do not think I have ever seen Trent Reznor look anything other than really pissed off, and usually wearing black.

Well, so much for spinning more positive, ado! You could say the same thing about any number of composers.

Gone Girl is definitely the best of the three Fincher/Reznor-Ross collaborations, so I'm not gnashing my teeth this time at their nomination.

I'm definitely hoping Budapest is looked on with great favor by Oscar and that Desplat gets a nomination for that score.

Random thoughts on the other movie categories:

Looks like Unbroken was shut out entirely.

Is this Wes Anderson's first GG Best Director nomination?

I had been holding out some hope that Oscar Isaac would get a nod for A Most Violent Year - alas, no. Same for Whiplash getting a Best MP, Drama nomination.

Interesting that Leviathan got nominated. That, and Ceylan's Winter Sleep, are the two overseas films of 2014 that I'm most eager to see eventually.

And, looking at the whole year-end scene, two of my top favorites of the year, The Better Angels and Low Down, are flying completely under the radar.

I hope Desplat wins an Oscar this year. The guy has put a lot of quality scores out there. The Imitation Game is a terrific score.

"Gone Girl" is the best score composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, it's extremely effective in the film and it's one of the top from this year. Don't underestimate it, watch the movie instead.

I can see that happening as "The Grand Budapest Hotel" is becoming a player in latest awards.

Looks like Unbroken was shut out entirely.

Yeah, it looks like "Unbroken" was so great as many of us thought before its release.

Yes, and it's quite strange how close he is to a best director nomination at Academy right now. Totally deserved in my humble opinion. His movie is terrific.

Whiplash will get it in the Academy Awards. Don't miss it.
