FRIDAY, DECEMBER 12

JUPITER ASCENDING---poster released of Mila Kunis starring in the Wachowskis movie. Kunis plays a janitor who is protected by a genetically-engineered, intergalactic bounty hunter from the deadly Queen of the Universe. Channing Tatum and Sean Bean also star.

DOCTOR WHO---the BBC released the official trailer for the Christmas special which airs on BBC America on Christmas Day.

Youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yge3X0HS6DE

ANT-MAN---Marvel Studios released the synopsis for the movie, "The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man. Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.”

MARVEL'S AGENT CARTER---synopses for the first two episodes were released.
Episode 1: “Peggy is contacted by old acquaintance Howard Stark when he is framed for unleashing his deadliest weapons and can trust no one else. To help Peggy clear Stark’s name, he insists his butler, Edwin Jarvis, be at her beck and call–whether she likes it or not. But the risk is great: If caught, Agent Carter could be targeted as a traitor and spend the rest of her days in prison…or worse.”
Episode 2: “Howard Stark’s deadliest weapon has fallen into enemy hands, and only Agent Carter can recover it. But can she do so before her undercover mission is discovered by SSR Chief Dooley and Agent Thompson?”

GHOSTBUSTERS---Jennifer Lawrence confirmed she met with director Paul Feig to discuss starring in the all-female reboot movie.

TRUE DETECTIVE---Rick Springfield tweeted that he is appearing in Season 2, "Just finished my 1st day of shooting for season 2 of HBO's True Detective. What a great script. Working w/ Colin Farrell & Rachel McAdams!"
Also, Ashley Hinshaw (TRUE BLOOD) has joined the cast as a "troubled actress".

PROMETHEUS 2---Ridley Scott said the sequel is set shortly after the original movie ends, "You have to. You can't have a person go off into the galaxy and have a person who's still got his head off. Once that head goes back on, he's really dangerous, but he's also very seductive. So maybe he'll persuade her to help him put the head back."
Scott said about the BLADE RUNNER sequel which involves a search for missing Rick Deckard, "Harrison and I really get on rather well. I sent him (the script), and he said 'That's the best thing I've ever read.' So it's very relevant to what happened in the first one. I'm not just doing a sequel with lots of action and see how far we can with the special effects. Because you can't really. With Blade Runner, we landed on a somehow very credible future. It's very difficult to change that because it's been so influential with everything else."

THE GOOD NURSE---movie underway based on the book about nurse Charlie Cullen who was arrested in 2003 for killing over 300 patients in 16 years. Darren Aronofsky is attached to direct.

EFFA---biomovie underway about Effa Manley who was the first woman inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Penny Marshall (A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN, BIG) is the director.

Hit or miss as they are the Wachowskis have a visual gift if nothing else. I will always defend Speed Racer as very enjoyable, watchable and visually rich, and pretty character driven for something such eye-candy.

Jupiter is more than likely dreadful, but it could be visually stunning.

Prometheus 2 had better have some more interesting characters & a better story than the first one.

If this ends up even as remotely delightful as "A League of Their Own", it will be a must-watch for me...

Obviously that was a personal opinion. I don't like all this, and all that. All black version, all female version, next all gay version, and gee the poor Asians still get screwed because there will never be an all Asian version of anything from Hollywood! I also don't care for the HG's star. But like I said, it will probably be a big hit.

And just how often do such things happen?

There's going to be another Ghostbusters movie no matter what; the franchise is simply too big and potentially lucrative for Sony to leave it alone forever. Given that, there are a couple ways it could go:

- It can be a sequel / continuation of the existing movies
- It can be a reboot

The former has a couple issues. If it's set in the same universe, at best it could bring back only three of the original four team members; Harold Ramis is and always will be sorely missed. Bill Murray has also long been notoriously resistant to it, even before Ramis's death. Having the original team at the center would inevitably fall short, with only part of the team returning. Alternately, it could place new characters at the center, with (some of) the original vets appearing in cameos as mentors or whatever, but frankly I don't think it would work quite as well for this franchise as it might in others.

The latter is probably the way to go, then, but has its own perils. Doing just a straight reboot would invite too many comparisons to the original, and probably doom the new movie as a pale imitation right out of the gate. There needs to be some new way of looking at the story, beyond just taking place decades later. Having an all-female team is one way to do that, and I actually think it's probably the best way to go.

Beyond that, I have to say I'm disappointed by your laments about "all this and all that". Hollywood's output is currently overwhelmingly dominated by stories about straight white dudes. Why is it so offensive / scary that anyone else should get some representation once in a while? How can it possibly be that straight white guys wanting stories about people like them aren't already more than adequately served, and everyone else rather underserved? Why should all stories about ghostbusters be about guys - why shouldn't there be female ghostbusters?

I have no problem with an all girl buddy action film. Or a film with two lead gay characters, or any other kind of film with original characters. I love "Aliens" and the lead was a female. So I have no problem with non white males having dominant roles.

The seas would part if they remade The Cosby Show with an all white cast. Or remade Thelma & Louise with two dudes. (I'm just tossing out ridiculous ideas to make a point) Annie was always a little freckled red-headed girl. Now shes a black girl. Why? If you want to create a musical starring a little black girl, fine create something new. If its good I will like it regardless if its a little white girl or little black girl. Add to the culture, don't mimic it in your own image. It's lazy and pandering.

I don't see it as being any more lazy than any other remake; in bringing new representation, it is adding something new to the culture. I don't see how it could be otherwise (unless you're lamenting it being a remake / reboot at all, and not specifically lamenting that the remake / reboot features people of different sexes / colors / etc. from the original).

With regards to your specific examples, there's false equivalence at work - the race / ethnicity of the Huxtable family and the sexes of Thelma and Louise are essential to those characters' narratives, in a way that the sexes of the Ghostbusters team members aren't to that story's core concept. And even if Ghostbusters was as much about "the boys" being boys and the perspectives and experiences that go with it, there's still already a bunch more representation of that on screen in general than there is of women and their perspectives.

--------

Look, the movie could still suck, sure. But I don't think simply having the core members of the team be female makes it any more likely. On the contrary, it's one of the few fresh things that could be done with a reboot to get me interested. I honestly would rather see this one than a reboot with just more (different) guys in the leads.

@ Joe E- I get what your saying. Actually I have no interest in another Ghostbusters film. The first one was fresh and unique. It didn't need a sequel to begin with.

We already had a version of Ghostbusters that focused on new characters with one* of the originals along:

*Well, three if you count Janine and the always-annoying Slimer.

I think the concern is more the quality of comedy produced by those involved and potentially involved in the reboot. The original had some smart writing and had some well drawn characters. The people involved in the reboot are pretty much toilet humor level types.

The original did have smart writing, but the people responsible also sometimes did "toilet humor level" stuff, while the people being discussed for involvement in the reboot - I believe Paul Feig is the only person more-or-less definitely known to be involved so far, after all - also run the gamut from smart writing and well-drawn-characters to toilet humor level. The potential is all over the map.

Moreover, I really don't profess to know what the end result of a movie that hasn't even been written yet (to say nothing of being released and seen, or all the steps in between) will be; I already made a point of saying it could suck. My main point here is just that there's nothing inherently wrong with a reboot featuring a female team, which is what it appeared others were objecting to. I'm not at all saying it automatically will be great or even good; I just think there's some reason for cautious optimism, in that they're at least starting out with a more creative premise than the bare minimum required. The rest is all up in the air.

i think there is some merit to what Solium is saying, that Hollywood runs empty on ideas with these franchises, and they just plug in a new type for a reboot. There is nothing necessarily awful about a female Ghostbusters, but there is nothing very creative or original about it either. It is not all that promising to me.

Jupiter Ascending sounds like good old fashioned pulp science fiction. I hope its good.
