I don't have the RCA, but the M Squad/Staccato disc from that Crime Jazz compilation is a definite downgrade in sound compared to this one Fresh Sounds released earlier in the year:

If it is M SQUAD that you want, go for the RCA album. Smokin' rerecordings that pay great respect for the material -- being released on LP just after season 2 or 3 of the series. Impressively, it contains three tracks by John Williams. Impressive because he only did 8 episodes.

I don't have the other album, but I'm sure that's fine too. Interestingly, Williams was also involved as pianist on STACCATO.

I would just get the Staccato DVD set, though I understand most of you don't like hearing the music in context with the stuff for which it was composed. wink

I have other RCA Spain CDs of music from that period, and the sound is very good.

STACCATO is prime Elmer, but I have not heard these two recordings.

Guys this was very helpful. Ended up going with RCA Spain version on iTunes. I agree with Onya and others tha RCA Spain pressings were first class recordings.

I have a DRG/EMI version of Staccato (paired with Paris Swings).
How does that compare with other versions?
