MONDAY, DECEMBER 15

STAR TREK 3---the four candidates to replace Roberto Orci as director of the sequel are: Rupert Wyatt (RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES), Justin Lin (FAST & FURIOUS), Daniel Espinosa (SAFE HOUSE) and Morten Tyldum (THE IMITATION GAME). Duncan Jones (MOON) was also a candidate, but he said he's not interested, “Very flattering being on short list for Star Trek, but won’t be doing it. Absolutely MUST make my own thing next, or I’ll die of old age!”

KONG: SKULL ISLAND---Legendary Pictures released a synopsis for the prequel movie starring Tom Hiddleston, "...KONG: SKULL ISLAND will fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island. Legendary’s story honors the foundations of existing King Kong lore, but places it in an entirely new, distinct timeline." Premiere is March 10, 2017.

SPECTRE---Christoph Waltz commented on rumors that he will play Ernst Stavro Blofeld in the James Bond sequel, "No, That’s a fact. I can guarantee...The character is called Franz Oberhauser. F-R-A-N-Z, Oberhauser, and I don’t need to spell that."

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS ---supposedly, among the original trio, Han Solo will be featured more than Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia, but Luke and Leia will be featured more in the final two movies in the trilogy.

BEETLEJUICE 2---Tim Burton commented on the sequel's status, “It’s a character that I love and I miss and I miss actually working with Michael [Keaton]. There’s only one Betelgeuse. We’re working on a script and I think it’s probably closer than ever and I’d love to work with him again.”

SPIDER-MAN---if the proposed deal between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios succeeds, supposedly the Spider-Man franchise will be rebooted with a new actor replacing Andrew Garfield, and the first five movies will be ignored. The reboot movie would deemphasize Peter Parker's love life compared to the previous movies. Also, the Sony various Spider-Man spinoff movies would be abandoned because Marvel "severely disliked" them.

X-MEN---hacked emails from the Sony Pictures say a crossover movie is underway involving the X-Men and The Fantastic Four. The email from Columbia Pictures co-president Michael De Luca to Sony Pictures co-chair Amy Pascal said, "[Simon] Kinberg told me fox is steering Xmen and Fantastic Four into an eventual team up film...Seems to me maybe, since the Spider-man universe itself is deep, you guys should look at sinister six, new spidey, female movie and venom as linked pieces leading to eventual mega movie ala Feige and Fox and not stand alone single films. It's early in all these and you can still map out a blueprint for connective tissue."

DOCTOR STRANGE---the three candidates to play The Ancient One in the Marvel Studio movie are Morgan Freeman, Bill Nighy and Ken Watanabe.

AQUAMAN---Jeff Nichols (TAKE SHELTER) is rumored to be the top candidate to direct the Jason Momoa movie.

MIAMI VICE---Universal Pictures is rebooting the 2006 Michael Mann movie based on his tv series. It's not known if Mann is involved in the reboot.

ARROW---Marc Singer (V, BEASTMASTER) will play Gen. Matthew Shrieve, leader of the Creature Commandos.

CRIMINAL MINDS---CBS is developing another spinoff series which focuses on an FBI unit that helps US citizens who are living abroad.

GHOSTBUSTERS---Ryan Gosling is in talks to play the undisclosed lead male role in the reboot movie.

THE KEEPING---movie set during the Civil War in which three Southern women in a house are terrorized by a renegade Union soldier. Brit Marling, Hailee Steinfeld and Sam Worthington star.

BEOWULF---ITV has ordered 13 episodes of a tv series based on the Anglo-Saxon poem which involves humans and mythical creatures.

ROADIES---Christina Hendricks (MAD MEN) has joined the Showtime pilot about a rock group on tour. Luke Wilson and Imogen Poots also star.

ATLANTA---FX pilot from Donald Glover (COMMUNITY) about two cousins in Atlanta's rap scene.

Hint, hint.

But Michael Shannon was already in that movie universe and what would Nichols do without him?!?!

Kidding aside, while the hole Nolan/Snyder DC thing interests me not at all, putting guys like Ayer and Nichols in there interests me very much.

Could be good, unless it goes all wild and IMAX-y.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS ---supposedly, among the original trio, Han Solo will be featured more than Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia, but Luke and Leia will be featured more in the final two movies in the trilogy.

Which means he'll die and become part of the force, most likely.

ANOTHER reboot? WTF, are they trying to set some sort of world record in reboots within the shortest amount of time?

While their busy dumping and interchanging Star Trek 3 :The Search for a Really Good Movie, directors I wish they dump that ugly thing they now call the Enterprise and either go back to the TOS or original movie design.

Well Han never had the force within him. So that would be odd.

LOL. Yeah and now it seems they will strip Peter Parker of all his humanity, and he will be just another mindless action figure.

No, they're trying to get creative control from Sony back to Marvel. Probably if they work something out they'll introduce Spider-Man into the marvel universe in the next Captain America movie, have him guest star in some of the others and the next Avengers, and he won't have a movie of his own until "Phase 4" 5 years down the line. This way, the reboot will be similar to what they did with The Incredible Hulk from Hulk: do a soft-reboot since people already know the origin story and just introduce the character already in costume into the Marvel Universe.

If you mean that Han will die in the next film, and then return as the "spirit of Han Solo", I doubt it, as Revenge of the Sith makes it clear that only Jedi can return from the force to the material world, and even then, only if they know how to do it. Qui Gon Jin was the first to figure out how to do this.

I suspect that his role will be reduced because the Sith threat will "awaken" in Episode 7 and become more formidable in Episodes 8 and 9, and with the Sith in full force, that will place more emphasis on the Jedi. Not unlike what happened in the classic trilogy once Luke's Jedi abilities had grown. Han's role in Return of the Jedi was reduced considerably to give Luke the spotlight. Also, the Star Wars series has been all about the Skywalker family, and although he is arguably the most popular character, Han Solo is nevertheless more of a supporting character in the stories. I suspect that this is one reason Ford has never been particularly fond of the character.

I don't have a problem with a reboot, but I will miss Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man. I thought he did a great job with the character even if his movies had problems.

The only director out of that Star Trek short list that is a good one is Rupert Wyatt.
Justin Lin? wow, that sounds really bad.

At the risk of repeating myself, in hopes that someone at Paramount wakes up.
Brad Bird. Hello?

I'm thinking Han will probably die in the next film.

Of course, we'll know for sure two weeks' ahead of time, when John Williams's score is released on CD and there's a track titled "The Death of Han." wink

Which will start the "Han Got shot first" movement on the net.

I don't have a problem with a reboot, but I will miss Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man. I thought he did a great job with the character even if his movies had problems.

Personally I think Garfield is a talented actor who is totally miscast as Parker / Spidey and is absolutely terrible in the role.

Tobey McGuire wasnt perfect by any means but his take on the roles was streets ahead of Garfield.

And seriously, Garfiled's hair, what the hell is all that about???

dreadful, dreadful casting. Please, Columbia, please can we have a YOUNG Spidey next time around?

I should probably declare that AI have hated both of Garfield's Spidey movies and to be honest even prefer Raimi's Spider-Man 3 to Webb's films. Sure, every single aspect of Venom was terrible (the simbiant just happens to land near Parker's moped??? Come on, that's the sort of coincidental plot device shit Orci and Kurtzman would write) but SandMan was well handled and I thought the Goblin resolution was quite touching too.

As someone who hates re-boots, I actually welcome a total re-boot of the Spidey movies, with a new cast, a new score (please give us a proper theme this time!!) and a new director. And NO sodding origin story!! It isn't bloody necessary to do that a third time - man alive, even my cat knows how Peter became Spidey by now!!

Mostly, they just need to dump those ugly, oversized warp nacelles.

This cracked me up. Did Marvel also "severely dislike" the dough that it put in their pockets?

Enough already. Let's all work together and make sure that it is the reboot that is, how did they put it?... "ignored".

"Phase 4"? Wow. This is the epitome of films turned into products, not art. It's no wonder the Marvel films all feel the same. Everything's plotted years ahead. They've got their formula. Now it's milking time!

Or the narrowing of the gap between TV and film. How is having planned "chapters" or "phases" of a movie series all that different to planning series or seasons for a TV program?
