How many of us members here truly appreciate the Henry Mancini score to "Santa Claus: The Movie"?
What I mean by “truly appreciate” is that we love it as much as - say... John Williams Star Wars for example – because that is how rich and melodic this score truly is!

I truly adore this score. It tops Superman in some ways, (probably because I know the Superman scores back-the-front so to speak) – but having said that – I asked some of you members last year – if you would be able to help me out with the complete lyrics to “Making Toys”? I didn't get much a response from anyone here. It seems to me then, that people are not interested in the lyrics. (Probably only the film version, and they skip the rest).

Well I am! I am extremely obsessed about this composition!

I studied the lyrics myself, and found out the complete lyrics to both versions on my own.
So people – please enjoy the complete “CORRECT” lyrics to both versions of “Making Toys” – The “MENS” Choir – and – The “CHILDRENS” Choir – although they are 95% similar – they do have different lyrics in some of the phrases.

Merry Christmas to all!

Making Toys - Lyrics By Leslie Bricusse ----- MEN’S CHOIR VERSION

STANZA 1:
Making toys, when you’re an elf, better be good
And you must also use quality wood
Quality must come first; that as an elf, matter of pride
Which ev’ry Yuletide we provide
We’re all master artists when we paint
We’ve never had one complaint
Colorful work improves; start it with green, yellow and blue
Happily making toys for you (Instrumental Pause)

STANZA 2:
Making toys, tons of toys, for a zillion girls and boys
All the toys ev’ry girl and boy enjoys
From animals and sailing boats
To dolls with shiny shoes and coats
And toys for boys who like a lot of noise
Sweets and treats for your tums
Made with thousand-gallon drums
It becomes one of life’s great joys
We are here to make your Christmas better ev’ry year
We really love making toys (Instrumental Break)

STANZA 3:
Making toys, there’s not a thing that we ignore
Santa will carry them right to your door
We’re at it all year long
As soon as one Christmas is done
Christmas of next year has begun
We work all the day and night time, too
Cause Christmas is all we do
Happy to tell you now, knowing the skill that it employs
There is no thrill like making toys

STANZA 4:
Making toys all the year is a very fine career
And we work in a happy atmosphere
We carve and weave and paint and sew
So many different things you know
The Children’s wants is never very clear
Though we say so ourselves
We are very clever elves
And our shelves show our perfect poise
Elves are seldom done, to sleep, when Christmas time is near
Let’s hear it for making toys

FINALE:
Making toys, that is the best job that there is
And ev’ry toy we make --- simply a breeze
Ev-er-y Christmas Eve, we have a big party to make
Keeping it making toys
Happily making toys again!

Wow, that's a lot of deciphering! Thanks for doing that. I've always wondered about this, as a lot of the words are difficult to discern.

I'm listening to the score now, almost done with album 1. I never listened to Mancini until I got obsessed with Lifeforce the last few months! I was hoping for an equally huge symphonic sound for Santa Claus but I'm a bit underwhelmed. But, like a good deal of scores, it might take a few listens to appreciate.

Pleasant enough for the season though! The movie looks like a hoot; it should be in the mail soon.

"Bump"

Since we are talking about my all time favorite scores - ever! (In other related threads)

I thought I might give you people another look at this amazing article I did last year.

I only got two replies - maybe because everyone was away on holidays by then.

Well... here is your opportunity to actually sing to "Making Toys".

Please note that both versions differ slightly (even though "they may" be 98% similar).

By the way friends - I don't care what time of the year it is - I play Santa Claus: The Movie (and Home Alone) all year round - whenever I get that wonderful feeling of "feeling young" - or things might be going well - it is always fantastic to hear great music!

It has been three years now since I have deciphered the true lyrics to my all-time favourite score to the holiday season. (Not to mention - this score rates somewhere in my top TEN favourite scores of all time)...
With five days to go, I would like to share with anyone who is remotely interested in the correct lyrics to "Making Toys" - The Men's and Children's Choir lyrics do differ - only slightly - and they are both presented. Merry Christmas, and a Happy and Safe 2018 to Everyone!

I have nothing but love for this score and I would probably put it as my favorite Mancini score. Thanks for the work on the lyrics, will print it out and put it with my booklet. LOVE love love the instrumental of this and so glad Quartet gave us so many instrumentals of the few songs.

smile
