Couldn't find a thread on this score (just on the series in the non-film-score discussion) so had to start one.

Just watched this British mini series this week (came back to Netflix streaming as the American remake, Gracepoint, just wrapped up).

A very strong mystery series that's really about loss and secrets in a small town, with wonderful casting top to bottom, starring David Tennant of Doctor Who.

And the ambient, minimal, electro-acoustic, disturbing but comforting score by the Icelandic composer Olafur Arnalds is first rate. It's available as an e.p. download from the usual places for five bucks, and all of his own music is also available and very much in the same vein.

Here's a good interview with him done for the BBC when the program originally aired:

I haven't gotten around to the series yet, but I love the score -- as I do everything I've heard of Arnalds so far. This is my kind of music these days. Smooth, ethereal textures that are instantly likeable.

You know, Thor, I was hoping at least you would reply to this! I figured this was on your radar, you eclectic dude, you. big grin

I was trepedatious about watching Broadchurch, don't care much for grim procedurals, but this was intriguing and thoughtful and not depressing to me even though the story is tough at best. The music was part of why.

Usually my local libraries buy series like Broadchurch, but I'm still waiting for them to purchase this series. I heard that Gracepoint was a remake of Broadchurch with the same lead detective, so I watched this whole series, and I really liked it. Can't say I noticed any music in Gracepoint. Now I want to compare the British and American series, so thanks for posting this. I'll tune my ears into this Icelandic composer when I get to see the British series.

Amalds’ wonderful score was one of the key elements that made this hugely entertaining series so gripping.

It creates an amazing atmosphere for the whole proceedings.

I don’t know how it will work as a “stand alone” listen though ?

Great excitement, in the Uk as “Broadchurch - 2” starts here in January. David Tennant, Olivis Colman and several members of the first cast star again.

Can’t wait !

While we're at it, I also recommend Arnald's GIMME SHELTER and LIFE IN A FISHBOWL. Similar style as BROADCHURCH.

We've seen a resurgence of Icelandic composers doing 'their own thing' (as they usually do) in the last few years, with Arnalds, Johann Johansson, Petur Ben etc. Used to be a time when the only Icelandic film composer I could think of was Atli Örvarsson -- who's great, no question, but his sound was more Hollywood than Icelandic.

Composer Marty Beller's first instructions when scoring "Gracepoint" was to emulate the sound of the "Broadchurch" scores. It was only after he'd scored two episodes that the producers decided their instructions were wrong, and Beller was ordered to rescore those two episodes entirely.
