Theodore Shapiro has reunited with director Jay Roach (Dinner for Schmucks, Game Change, The Campaign) and is currently scoring upcoming biographical drama TRUMBO about the life and carreer of Hollywood writer Dalton Trumbo, which came to an end when he was blacklisted in the 1940s for being a Communist. The movie stars Bryan Cranston in the title role, as well as Elle Fanning, Helen Mirren, John Goodman, Alan Tudyk or Diane Lane.
TRUMBO is currently in post production and will be released in 2015.
Yup. That looks like Trumbo's trademark working style, if that's supposed to be him on the big projection screen behind the musicians. An ashtray mountain of cigarette butts could actually substitute Trumbo. If I was going to parody him that's how it would be.
Kirk Douglas describes in his book a meeting with Trumbo at Trumbo's place. Trumbo is actually in the bath, with typewriter and ashtray located conveniently in front of him. Perched on Trumbo's shoulder is the parrot Douglas gave him, the sole eyewitness to a pretty burdensome wordcount in the making, I would imagine.

I'm pretty sure Trumbo's life didn't end in the 40s, and almost as certain his career didn't either; it just went underground. Looks like an interesting flick though, even if I can't quite see Malcolm's father as one of the most talented screenwriters of the 20th Century.

Apparently you've missed just about everything that "Malcolm's father" has done since that show ended. (Try "Breaking Bad" for starters). Anyway, you're definitely right about Trumbo continuing both to exist and to have a career past the 40s, since he wrote screenplays for ROMAN HOLIDAY (1953), and EXODUS and SPARTACUS in the early 60s. (A life and a career are both required for such accomplishments.)
I have never heard Mr. Shapiro's work. I'm looking forward to the film; should I also be looking forward to the score?

BTW, any discussion of the film itself (presumably when it opens) will have to move next door to the Non-Film Score Discussion Board -- where it will probably end up being shut down for vituperative politics.
