Joseph Sargent ( July 22, 1925 - December 22, 2014) has died at age 89. An extremely talented director of popular TV shows in the 1960's such as 'Gunsmoke', 'The Fugitive', 'Star Trek' and 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.', he really came in to his own in the '70's with the excellent feature films 'Colossus the Forbin Project', 'The Man' and especially 'The Taking of Pelham One Two Three'. Later in his career, Sargent directed many TV movies, one of the more distinguished being 1990's 'The Incident'.

Really loved his SOMETHING THE LORD MADE. Superb Christopher Young score.

He got to work with Goldsmith on THE MAN and MACARTHUR and he directed one of my all time favorite STAR TREK TOS episodes, "The Corbomite Maneuver"! I raise a glass of Trania to him!

Seemed like a real nice man in the business, I would have loved to work with.

Rest in Peace and condolences to family, friends and colleagues.

I and many relished your work!

ah, the man from Uncle movies man!

liked his work, espec Pelham and White Lightning and as you say, Forbin. Quite shocked to see he didnt get more major movies after a Cv with those 3 on, he undoubtedly would have done a decent job of other projects. As arthur says, seems like he got a hell of a lot of T.v films and smaller budget dramas in later years.

I was always a fan of Buck and the preacher, anyone know why he left the project?

Whitelaw, Cocker and Sargeant in 3 days. Is this what happens when you get older - somebody whose work you admire passes away every day?!

I didn't know that Sargent was married to actress Mary Carver, best known for playing Cecelia Simon in "Simon & Simon", one of my childhood favorites.

In looking over his credits, I'm curious as to the quality of the 1975 TV movie of "Friendly Persuasion."

A February 1971 Daily Variety news items reported that the change of directors was made due to “differences between the director and stars.” Filmfacts quoted actor Cameron Mitchell as stating that Sargent “was shooting the picture like a TV show.” Filmfacts also quoted co-producer Harry Belafonte, who stated: “We might as well face it. We needed a black man for a sensitive job about black people.” In his autobiography, Poitier related that he took over direction of the film at the urging of Belafonte because they both felt that Sargent was not emphasizing “certain values dear to [them]." In a long article about the production in March 1971, Daily Variety reported that Sargent was amenable to being replaced, because he felt that Poitier “had breathed and lived with it [the film] since its conception….It’s his film. It’s as simple as that, and there was nothing racial about it whatever.”

Pretty sure he directed several of my favourite episodes from my favourite TV series of all time: The Invaders.

Sargent directed a TV movie that was so popular that it was released to a few U.S. theaters following its initial broadcast. "Tribes" was originally telecast on ABC-TV on November 10, 1970. A few prints were hastily made, and it had its theatrical premiere in Madison, Wisconsin on December 2, 1970.

He also directed Jaws The Revenge (1987).

Although the reputation of the movie is not soo good it has a great score by Michael Small.

RIP
