Questions:
Bernard Herrmann really recorded 'Torn curtain' in 'only 1 session, March 1966, in Los Angeles'? This information is correct? If so, any chance of a label release this work?
The performance/version of Elmer Bernstein, 1977, is reasonable, however, the Joel McNeely’s version, 1997, is anemic and very low sound, in my opinion; anyway, where is the original recording of ‘Torn Curtain’ with the great Herrmann? When can we have it?

Thanxxxx!

Whatever Herrmann recorded seem to still exist.

HIP-O records released a CD called "Alfred Hitchcock Presents Signatures In Suspense"

It contains several selections from the Herrmann recording that were laid down before Hitchcock pulled the plug.

Here is a link to AMAZON where you can pick it up very cheaply at the moment.

http://www.amazon.com/Alfred-Hitchcock-Presents-Signatures-Anthology/dp/B00000JMKS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1419477994&sr=8-1&keywords=Alfred+Hitchcock+Presents+Signatures+In+Suspense

Now there has been a question as to how much Herrmann recorded, but these sections are pretty cool

Interesting this CD, partner! In the past I had heard something about it, but I always had doubts whether they were the original versions, and it seems so. I'll buy it! (http://www.soundtrackcollector.com/title/9885/Alfred+Hitchcock+Presents+Signatures+In+Suspense).

In addition to 3 parts of 'Torn Curtain', we also have other rarities as the main title of 'Dial M For Murder' & 'I Confess' of Tiomkin, and 'Frenzy' of Ron Goodwin ....
Thank you for reminding me of this CD!
Happy Holidays and all the best!

The old Tiomkin Coral LP album "Movie Themes from Hollywood" has already been available on the now quite rare Japanese CD "Hollywood Master Sound" in 1995 (together with one of those Victor Young Decca compilations also from the mid-50s):

Herrmann only recorded about nine cues before Hitchcock cancelled the session. It would be nice to have even those on CD.

It certainly would be nice to have them on CD. Going by the bonus feature on the DVD, the nine cues that got recorded are:

Prelude
The Ship
The Radiogram
The Hotel
The Bookstore
The Book
The Travel Desk
The Blurring
The Killing

Hello, partner, yes, perfect...these 9 parts, I have heard in my DVD ...
but there somewhere (bootleg, for example) these 9 parts isolated from the dialogues of the film?

Thank you!

Maybe if you check with the David Raksin estate, or where ever his papers and recordings are now kept, may contain a copy. That evening, after the recording session and blowup between Hitchcock and Herrmann, Herrmann had Raksin and a few others over and they listened to what transpired, which was recorded.

You may also want to post to the Bernard Herrmann message board: http://herrmann.uib.no/talking/list.cgi?forum=thGeneral

At this point, the Universal Herrmann stuff (PSYCHO, all TORN CURTAIN tracks, MARNIE, CAPE FEAR, THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, and COMPANIONS IN NIGHTMARE) doesn't seem likely to appear on legitimate CD. I'd love to be proved wrong.

Hopefully those who love Bernard Herrmann's "Torn Curtain" have had a chance to enjoy the "Behind the Locked Door" episode cues from "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour" with some embryonic "Torn Curtain" goings on in the mix.

The discography of Bernard Herrmann is problematic if you think of how many original titles were actually released.
I made a list of some works that I consider important and have not yet been released (I'm referring to the original soundtrack, of course, not the re-recordings).

Psycho, Marnie & Cape Fear have been released by pirates label/bootleg, and with a very good sound quality. I have these 3 soundtracks and you can find on the following links:

Psycho (1960) (Complete 47 min) (Sound Stage Records/iTunes):

Cape Fear (1962) (Complete 49 min) (Sound Stage Records/iTunes):

Marnie (1964) (Complete 50 min) (Tsunami Records/iTunes):

The following works, the original versions/soundtracks, were not released, maybe you can find snippets or fragments scattered on bootlegs, but not complete. Really these soundtracks must be released before the few fans of Herrmann die! (wake up Kritzerland, Intrada, Varese, Quartet!):

The Trouble With Harry (1955)
The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)
Torn Curtain (1966)
Citizen Kane (1941)
The Devil And Daniel Webster (1941)
The Magnificent Ambersons (1942)
The Kentuckian (1955)
Williamsburg - The Story Of A Patriot (1957)
The Naked And The Dead (1958)
Jason And The Argonauts (1963)

The next 2 soundtracks have been officially released but are incomplete, I believe:

Mysterious Island (1961) (42 min) (Silva Screen Records)
Battle Of Neretva (1969) (35 min) (Southern Cross Records)

The labels don't need to “wake up.” They're quite aware of the popularity of these scores. If these recordings haven't been officially released, then there is very good reason for it.

Anyway, discussions of bootlegs are against the board rules.

Quite right. It never ceases to amaze me how people around here seem to think that the specialty labels that cater specifically to this market are somehow clueless as to what people buy.

I was friends with Ethmer Roten, who played on almost every Universal film score since 1946, where we was the second flutist in the studio's contract orchestra. He recalled being at the TORN CURTAIN session, only to be told that the next day's planned session had been canceled. He said nobody knew what happened, and it wasn't until I told him about Herrmann being fired did he finally learn the truth. To him it was merely a lost day of work, but he did recall the unique orchestration, which included, I believe, a dozen flutes.
