Howdy folks!

Weird question today: I've just received the 2-CD IVAN THE TERRIBLE (conducted by Fedoseyev) in the mail and upon opening it, the CDs immediately struck me as odd-looking. Methinks I'm looking at either low-quality pressings or professional CDrs. The latter was not specified in the Amazon listing; the CD artwork/booklet is genuine, though. Since I'm no specialist, would you mind taking a look at the photos below and weigh in on this?

Thanks, CK

Obviously a scam, CK - you can see right through it!

(Sorry - probably didn't help...)

The shine-through look reminds me of the questionable THE GOONIES CDs that turned up suddenly 1-2 years ago. I remember that apart from the visible oddity, it was also almost impossible to read in my Mac drive and completely refused to rip in iTunes. Have you tried if it works normally in a computer drive?

I know this question relates to a CD and whilst i have never seen a professional or CD-R version that is transparent, there are many Bluray discs, particularly from Paramount Home Video that indeed look see-through like this. The content is intact so it could very well be that the CD itself is in fact genuine. Really hard to be certain these days. Often times even recordings that look real are in fact nothing more than bootlegs.

Trying to figure out what's going on in that window with those decorations

Trying to figure out what's going on in that window with those decorations

It snowed, so it must be Easter. And because Easter relates to Jesus, who was born Jewish, there's also a wooden star similar to a Star of David. Makes sense?

And thanks, Projectionist, for your info! smile

Nimbus is very well known classical music label.

I purchased this set when it first came out, and I have pressed discs. The printed band around the rim is yellow, as is the ornamentation around the Nimbus Records logo, and the word "NIMBUS" can be read around the edge of the clear plastic inner circle. If this is legit, they must have switched to print-on-demand once the original stock ran out.

I emailed Nimbus Records about this issue, and received the following (satisfying) answer:

(...) I can confirm that your 2 CD set has been manufactured by Nimbus Records and is a legitimate product, using our "On Demand" manufacturing service. This service was put in place for our titles that do not sell very many, thus being able to keep them available to the consumer.

You are correct in saying that it was previously manufactured as pressed stock, however once this sold out we could not justify the cost of manufacturing another 500 / 1000 units, so we put in place the facility to manufacture in house using Sony Grade A silver CD-r's. The print is existing print, as with a lot of our titles we had overstocks, so this is being used up. Once this is used, we will then digitally print our own CD books and inlays in house to.

With all our CD's that are manufactured using the on demand service, there is a 35 year guarantee and if any item is deemed to be faulty we will replace it.

Thanks again for your input, folks! smile

Thanks for sharing their response. It's interesting they chose to define their guarantee period.
