Some of you probably remember the amazing score by Aaltio for the Finnish nature documentary, Metsän Tarina. It is truly one of the best compositions of the past decade, and it won the IMFCA award for best documentary score the year it came out...and now it is receiving a follow-up! Aaltio is attached according to IMDb and I certainly hope and expect that MSM will be putting out his new score. This has just shot to the top of my most anticipated scores of 2015!

For those unfamiliar, here's James Southall's excellent review of the first score:

There is a trailer on YouTube with familiar music...not sure if it's reused from the first score or if Aaltio wrote new music for the trailer.

Nice! If it's in the same style as METSÄN, it should be brilliant.

(if it gets released)

considering amount of Panu Aaltio's music available, I wouldn't probably hold my breath frown

Considering the acclaim the last one got I would guess it was MSM's best selling score by the composer...of all his works I'm thinking this is the most sure bet to get released! Don't suppose you could throw us a bone here, Moviescore?

Järven tarina was third most watched film on its opening week behind The Hateful Eight and SW7. I hope this popularity will lead to release of Aaltio's score which has been praised in the reviews (and it also features the voice of quite a well-known Finnish singer Johanna Kurkela). Unfortunately Finnish film score releases are almost nonexistent nowadays. However there was a release of Aaltio's Hella W soundtrack a few years ago, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Not sure if it was Mikael himself or through MSM FB page, but there are some clues this one should be finally released soon...

It is clearly re-used from the first film score but it is exciting nonetheless. One of the few complex thematic scores for a documentary that I can't get enough of.

Well I have been listening to this twice in a row this morning and it is a very different score to the previous one. Where Tale of a Forest was playful and adventurous this new score is regal and more somber. It still has some of the flavors that made Tale of a Forest so delightful but in a different approach with the new female vocals giving it a fantastic start and a nice unique sound. I do miss the heavy woodwind focus of Tale of a Forest but I have come to enjoy the different ways this score explores the new material. I also noticed a nice little hint of one of the previous themes in the second to last track. It is probably better that it is not just more of the same as that could get quite repetitive.

The sound clips are quite magical. I have to listen to this more in depth from Spotify. I'm really glad they choose Johanna Kurkela to provide the vocals. She previously sung the theme song from the film Prinsessa, which was written by Tuomas Kantelinen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEgozdNywNY). And she was also featured vocalist on Nightwish songwriter Tuomas Holopainen's solo album The Life and Times of Scrooge (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICBbTKy6sxE).
