And so it begins… Series 9’s first director appears to have been outed.

Daniel O’Hara will helm 2 episodes, according to his online CV. Interestingly both are listed at 60-mins long.

O’Hara’s more recent TV work includes Silent Witness, The Game, Being Human and Wizards vs. Aliens.

Two of those shows have been written by Doctor Who writer Toby Whithouse, coincidentally. Could this indicate another collaboration for the pair?

Not sure how that's gonna work in the US. A one hour segment of commercial TV only provides enough time for 44 minutes of actual program. Maybe they will have special limited commercial breaks or speed up the video.

They'll probably put it into a longer timeslot.

When they run over 60 minutes they usually put it in a 90 minute time slot. Which means a lot of commercials! Worst yet DW isn't edited together with commercials in mind, so sometimes the cuts are really bad when they are broadcast in the US. At least I can DVR it and fast forward.

I usually like to watch the episode On-Demand. I agree about BBCA, yeah they need to send someone to editing school.
As for the programme schedule, don't get me started. lol

LOL, yeah the cuts can be awful. I wonder if they let software automatically insert commercials as required instead of someone actually finding the best possibly place (within reason) for the breaks.

BBC America has taken to airing Doctor Who as an 80 min block for the last couple of seasons so as not to have to edit the eps. I know for sure that the Xmas and other specials are aired without edits for time.
The Sci-Fi Channel used to be pretty merciless about their edits and commercial breaks when they first aired DW in the US. BBCA has been a bit kinder.

I am sooo looking forward to Capaldi's 2nd season as The Doctor, but I am less enthused about Clara's return. Clara as a character is so problematic, I though the first enduing of 'Last Christmas' was a lovely and thoughtful way to send her off and clear the decks. The 2nd ending was not endearing her to me in any way.

I think Series 8 was Clara's best. But yeah I'm kinda annoyed she's sticking around after they gave her a good send off.

I agree, Clara went from plot device in Series 7 to actual character in Series 8 and she was the better for it

If Series 9 continues to deconstruct The Doctor AND explore the dark side of being a Companion via Clara, it could be a the most intense season of Doctor Who yet/ever.

It appears that the Doctor Who team will be heading to Spain for some filming on Series 9.

Director of Photography Ali Asad, who is working on two episodes for the next block, tweeted the news.

He wrote: “Going to Spain on a location recce for the Dr.”

Doctor Who more recently used the country for scenes in Asylum of the Daleks, A Town Called Mercy and Kill the Moon.

Toby Whitehouse hasn't written a bad episode yet in my opinion, and I welcome a two-parter from him. Nice to see last year's finale wasn't a one-off. Good for Moff keeping to his word when he said that if the right story comes along it would still happen. Of course it could be his bosses who asked for this...

I consider School Reunion something of a classic, especially in the case of what almost amounts to an anniversary episode. He crams a hell of a lot in there with very little of it short changed. The plot may be a little thin, but it's enough and still gives everyone, regulars and guests plenty, not to mention some series-best wonderfully 'physical' cgi. And all in that 45 min slot that noWho haters 'love' so much. What he'll do with two parts to go at is an exciting prospect.

He also has showrunner written right through him, and would pleased to see him get a go. The varied selection of episode styles, including one that celebrates the past so very, very well makes him a perfect choice. For me he is definitely one new series writer who 'gets' the series.

Filming has begun in Cardiff for series 9 of Doctor Who and includes a star-studded guest cast. The new series will be back on BBC One in Autumn 2015.

The episodes currently being filmed are written by Toby Whithouse (The Game, Being Human), produced by Derek Ritchie and directed by Daniel O’Hara (Silent Witness 2015, The Game, Being Human).

Steven Moffat, lead writer and Executive Producer, said, “An amazing guest cast for a brilliantly creepy two-parter by Toby Whithouse. Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman are back in Cardiff, back in the box, and back in action – for one of our scariest adventures yet!”

On set filming for the new series, Peter Capaldi added, “The adventures begin again for myself and Jenna and I’m delighted to be back filming my second series of Doctor Who.”

Paul Kaye who played Thoros of Myr in the third series of Game of Thrones joins the Doctor Who cast for the two-part episode. A comedian and actor, Paul is also well-known for being the voice of Vincent the fox on the puppet-based BBC comedy Mongrels.

Commenting on his role, Paul Kaye, said, “As a kid of the 1970s, the two shows you always watched were Top of the Pops and Doctor Who, they were unmissable. I actually wrote a song called ‘Looking for Davros’ in my first punk band and I sang it like a demented Dalek. I got to present TOTP back in the mid ‘90’s and landing this role in Doctor Who completes the dream double.

“Peter is a perfect Doctor and I’m loving every minute of the experience, even the five hours in make-up. What a treat, best 50th birthday present ever!”

Also starring in the episodes will be Morven Christie who recently played the role of Amanda in the crime drama Grantchester and featured in Death in Paradise (2014) and Twenty Twelve.

Arsher Ali who played the part of Malik Suri in the critically acclaimed The Missing (BBC One) takes up a role in the guest cast alongside Colin McFarlane who appeared in EastEnders as part of the Who Killed Lucy Beale? storyline.

Recognised for her theatre and TV performances, actress Sophie Stone appears in the show for the first time. Sophie was the lead actress in the play Woman of Flowers and has appeared in Midsummer Murders and Casualty.

Also joining Peter Capaldi (the Doctor) and Jenna Coleman (Clara Oswald) and confirmed for roles in the double episode are Zaqi Ismail, Steven Robertson and Neil Fingleton.

Further guest cast for series 9 will be released over the coming months. Doctor Who is a BBC Cymru Wales production for BBC One.

Ok, tenuous connection to Series 9, but there is a mention of the latest Doctor. An interview from today's UK tabloid The Mirror with Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston, the previously very different Doctor, and a breath of fresh air in my opinion even more so than the present one.

Interviewer "WARNED on three separate occasions NOT to talk about Doctor Who". Still love the guy but perhaps the oddest statement is about the filmgoing experience these days being "completely swallowed up by the comic book franchise", after he himself only recently did Thor: the Dark World.

I'm starting to think the less actors (and directors) speak the better. They so contradict themselves. I don't think it's lying or perhaps even intentional BS, but perhaps their heads are just wrapped around to many things at once. I don't particularly respect the "speak your mind" attitude, then demand rules of what can be asked either.

It still galls me that he must have known what he was getting into taking the part in the first place. The kind of actor he tells us he is wouldn't be so ignorant of what it entails both during and after playing it. He will have known very well about the fanbase and how much most Who actors have embraced it all.

And the comment about having to eat a lot of sh*t suggests that's what he thinks of his successors. There was that story of him complementing the casting of Matt when he first got the part, but I bet he would have squirmed through the David Tennant tribute on the NTV awards,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAUxarbZF60&x-yt-ts=1422327029&x-yt-cl=84838260

... if he happened to come across any of it by mistake.

I wonder how his experience during Series 1 affected his relationship with RTD? His interviews around the time of his early days after getting Who is full of praise for the writer and how he was doing it because of him. As it soured this?

Otherwise I thought he was an original Doctor. I like the ones that break up the monotony of frock coats and whimsy. Not that I don't like the 'traditional', by which I mean Patrick Troughtonesque, but William Hartnell, Jon Pertwee, and Eccleston break up the 'usual thing'. Colin Baker might have been as good, with the right regime as is Peter Capaldi up to a point. Or he will be if he's allowed to assert his character from behind the companion, and dispense with the Matt Smith-isms.
