My brother, who lives near Boston, phoned just now to tell me about the first broadcast he had just heard of the following NPR program on WGBH 89.7 FM:

http://wgbhnews.org/post/cinema-classic-challenge-2001-space-odyssey-0

The second broadcast will occur tonight, 9:00 PM - Midnight, EST. One of the people who phoned in to contribute to the discussion was none other than Douglas Trumbull.

At some point, this program will also be available as a podcast.

You're very welcome, Chris. But, unless tonight is last night…

Oh well, you can always listen to the podcast.

I suppose I got the wrong night, Preston.
I listened….but no 2001 and no Trumbull…

Oh well.

I tried to listen on the night of the 14th using the link Preston provided to the live radio stream of this program and all I heard was an NPR political talk show. Needless to say I got out of there in a hurry. Is it possible this program on 2001 was scheduled for a different night?

First things first. Dear Chris, what did you think I meant about "tonight" and "last night"? I was trying to point out that my first post had announced the program for the 14th. So yes, naturally, the 15th was the wrong night. But, as I pointed out, there is supposed to me a podcast, according to my brother. I'll call him to see if I can get more information about that.

Second things second. For Anzaldiman, who DID listen on the 14th -- I confess that I myself did not attempt it -- assuming you were tuning in at the right time, I don't know what to tell you. Did my brother get the time wrong? I dunno, I'll ask him that, too.

Preston,

I appreciate you posting the link, and yes, I tuned in on the same day you posted the thread at 9:00 pm and tried several times after that later in the evening and did not hear the 2001 program. As I stated, something else was being broadcast. Thanks again for sharing and for posting the link. I shall try to catch up with it at a later date. Best to you.

Trumbull talks about 120 fps with extremely bright projection in 3D, no doubt to counter current problems with the filters in the glasses you need to wear to bring the effect to life.

No lament for film itself, although I think I detected a slight cautionary note vocally with respect to the medium - obviously he is pursuing the highest image fidelity possible because that's what he does. And just maybe, that is what cinema requires in order to heighten the cinematic experience for jaded cinema-goers. The problem for me is that if all it does is to look like high definition video, it might kill the established feel already bestowed of what the life-long cinematic experience means to me.

Went to a theater to see INTERSTELLAR yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised to see in the end credits crawl a statement along the lines of, "This motion picture was shot and edited on film," or words to that effect.

Thxs for the link! I think it's hilarious some guy calls in and says huge realistically lit models looks cartoonish compared to (cartoonish) CGI. Just because you can add a million elements on the screen at once doesn't make it more realistic.
