Can someone who has the Prometheus release of Barry's Robin and Marian tell me what you think of the sound quality? It seems to me that I recall some saying it was pretty poor.

It's mono but fine quality in my opinion.

Ha ha, yes it is! In fact, I personally think it's the most perfectly recreated one in that John Barry series you did. And they were all very well done. You shouldn't be surprised to hear that I own both and play both. :-) Cheers

While I appreciate the Prometheus release, I much prefer the Tadlow recording. Most of the time I have no problem with mono, but the sound on this particular score seems too pinched and limited. The recreation by James and Nic is so good that I don't play the original soundtrack recording very often.

The sound quality is fine, but I vastly prefer the new recording. I really like the sweeteners that Richard Shores added to the score and the Prometheus album doesn't include any of them.

The Prometheus release is mono as has been said, and I agree with Steve, it sounds fine to me, and it is the original Barry recording which for me outweighs all other considerations. Having said that, the re-recording is a very fine work and would make a great companion piece to the original. It depends on whether your desire for audio purity outweighs your appreciation of the original, and therefore for me at least, the definitive recording. For the record (pun intended) I have both of these CD's, as well as the unmentionable CD, the laser disc with the isolated score, the promo LP (with the photocopied track list) that was distributed at the film's premiere (at least I understand it was), and the LP unmentionable (which contains the vocal). I've actually decided NOT to get Robin and Marian afterall... I was whistling the music yesterday, and I remembered just how DAMNED SAD the majority of the music is, and with my life-long history of depression, it could very well trigger a bout, so I'm going to have to pass on it.

The sound quality is fine, but I vastly prefer the new recording. I really like the sweeteners that Richard Shores added to the score and the Silva Screen album doesn't include any of them. I think you meant to write the Prometheus album doesn't include any of them. I, too, owned the Sherwood LP release of this wonderful score ,,, though I found the song less than wonderful I also bought a CD release (also Sherwood label) and found that this was not the same programme and it suffered various sound anomalies. I think it was produced from a rip of the Laser Disc but in those pre-internet days very little information was available (and I recall the retailer was less than forthcoming with background details!) So, yes, the Silva Screen release was a wonderful addition ... lovely clear sound, etc. But: returning to that LP, I had always found that the action cues seemed wrong ... they just weren't John Barry ... and, to me, sounded just like an adaption of the music from The Man from U.N.C.L.E even though I did not own any of those scores at that time and was never a fan of the TV series. And so the information in the Silva Screen CD sleeve notes was most enlightening. I did not know the name Richard Shores but this explained why those cues sounded out of place. I agree that the re-recording has far better sound than the Prometheus OST release but, whilst I prefer to own both releases, if I had to keep only one ... Mitch

Me too, Heath! Thanks for posting that link, been a long time since I heard that fabulous WWW music by Shores. I agree that the Silva re-recording of Robin and Marian is great, along with Lion in Winter/Mary Queen of Scots and Last Valley. I have the originals of the latter three, but stuck with the re-recording for R & M.

This is a Barry score I've just been never able to appreciate, for whatever reason. Of the 2 releases I would be more likely to listen to the rerecording, but I don't think it's anywhere near 'The Lion In Winter' or 'The Last Valley'. I can't really pinpoint the reasons as to why I'm not that fond of it, but it's not a score I would visit too often. Of the three scores of this informal medieval-set trilogy, it is definitely not in the same class as its brethren. However, to be fair to Barry his was a replacement score which, if I recall correctly, he wrote in just a few weeks. Even so, it has many lovely moments and that memorable love theme, with its wistful, autumnal air, captures the essence of the film perfectly (never mind director Richard Lester's opinion on the matter!). And James, I also love your re-recording, along with all the others you have done!
