I was just able to watch the "flat" version on the Blu-ray -- it plays as picture-in-picture-- wow.
it looks way better than the Cinemascope version in terms of color, framing and proportion, i.e.( faces are not stretched by the scope lens). I wish we could watch this completely different version of THE ROBE on a separate BR -- its even better acted at times.
