was Star Trek: TNG popular in the UK during its original run? I know it wasn't in the Mike_J household, but what about elsewhere?

It certainly seemed popular....there were VHS releases of all the episodes (the Pilot being given quite some fanfare and publicity), they were screened - on BBC, for the first couple of seasons - a fair while behind the USA but that just fuelled us fanboys even more....yeah, it's fair to say that - certainly among several sections of the population - it was a major event. For frame of reference, the UK broadcasts of TNG started whilst I was doing my GCSE's (aged 16) and continued right through my University period. Vividly remember snapping up "All Good Things" on day of VHS release and chucking everyone out of the TV room so I could watch it with a few friends, but everyone stayed and watched and cheered along! Great stuff....

"All Good Things..." Seriously. That would have made a far better feature than Generations. The needless addition of Kirk made the entire second half a forced mess, which is a shame since everything works fairly well until Picard gets into the Nexus.

I don't buy the Enterprise destroying the Klingon ship with one torpedo (especially since that same damn model of ship posed such a threat to the Galaxy Class ship, repeatedly!) and the reused explosion from VI pissed me off even as a seven year-old. Fumble, fumble, fumble. And did I mention Kirk treats Picard like his servant at one point? Yup. That happened.

Done with Generations.

First Contact is the best *real* TNG movie to me. Best character content, best villain, best plot.

Insurrection would have been a fine episode, but falls flat as a movie. I still enjoy it. Piller had some terrific ideas. It's a shame Paramount micromanaged him like they did, demanding specific dialogue and new characters.

I really enjoy the philosophical material behind Anij, the way she tells Picard to "stop analyzing today... stop planning for tomorrow" and live in the moment. Best of all, in the midst of a time when he feels overwhelmed, rundown, and old, they have this exchange:

Anij: Are you aware of the trust you engender, Jean-Luc Picard? It's not common for-

Picard: For an offlander.

Anij: For someone so young.

Their performances, combined with Goldsmith's score, are magic. If the entire movie had been that good, it would have been wonderful.

Nemesis had buckets of potential, but was cut to pieces in post, to say nothing of the plot holes. My favorite?

(Paraphrased)

Picard: Why are we losing telemetry?

Data: We're entering the Bassen Rift. It will cut off all sensor data from outside.

Picard: Derp.

And the fleet never checks on them! They HAD to be overdue. That battle was about a half hour. Maybe forty minutes!

That said, I enjoy it... but haven't watched it in nearly a decade. I wish Frakes could have directed it as originally planned.

And I would LOVE to know what Spiner and Logan had planned for Star Trek XI.

Bumped because I re-watched Nemesis and also because I found the thread--thanks to Google.
