Check out this snippet from a 1959 GENERAL ELECTRIC THEATER Score composed by Elmer Bernstein about Israel's David & Goliath starring Tony Curtis as David. The episode is entitled "THE STONE".

Listen and what do you think? Is there a Jewish Hymn that they both based their music on, or used for their scores? They both sound pretty similar.

Starting at 0:26

It must be a Jewish Folk Tune I think, cause Jerry uses it again in his GOING UP OF DAVID LEV Score.

Listen at 3:26 and you'll hear the phrase in question:

I'd like to hear the Original Source of the Theme if one exists. Anyone? It's really more of a 5 note phrase than a Theme.

You can watch the complete episode of G.E. Theater's "THE STONE" here:

Oh that great Elmer Bernstein G.E. Theater Theme music and beautiful young feisty Rita Moreno bitch slapping Tony!

Didn't really feel that sounded enough like Masada myself. David Lev has always sounded an inspiration for what Goldsmith would do for Masada but that's about it. I think QBVII features a Jewish hymn in the score though.

Both melodies are based in the instrumentation and chord progressions of traditional Jewish melody, but I don't believe they are based on any specific tune. As for Goldsmith being inspired by this Bernstein score, the more-than-two-decades gap between these projects makes that seem quite unlikely to me (I don't know how Goldsmith would have heard it in the intervening years). I think it's just two composers well versed in a certain style of writing happening upon a vaguely similar idea.

Elmer used a similar figure in 'Cast a Giant Shadow'.

Not a great choice in the 'David' context: too E. European influenced for the era.
