I am sure that it is obvious to us that the release of this new vinyl version of ALIEN is, to say the least, a challenge. But, I have a theory as to why.
In Mondo’s releases of THE OMEN, THE IRON GIANT, and POLTERGEIST, the label had to pay 2 royalties—one to the studio that owns each film and the other to the other album label, either Varese Sarabande or Rhino (POLTERGEIST only) for using their album master for these releases.
For ALIEN, Mondo will have to pay 3 royalties:
1. Fox, who owns the film
2. Intrada, who owns the album masters of their expanded CD release, if Mondo decides to use them
3. UMG, who owns the album rights. When Intrada produced their CD release, they had to pay a royalty to UMG.
I think that Mondo didn’t count on that 3rd royalty when they prematurely announced their vinyl release in their poster (see above). To them, that is one royalty to many.
However, if Mondo were to use the 2-channel analog album master of the film’s first commercial release, they only have to pay one label royalty—to UMG—instead of two label royalties and the limited edition vinyl release can still happen.
I would prefer that Mondo would do the latter, master the vinyl from the analog master.
