Does anyone know why a soundtrack for The African Queen by Allan Gray has never been made available.
Is it the usual suspects? Tapes lost, rights disputes so on and so forth.
Not a terribly long score. Could be coupled with another Allan Gray or perhaps a score to a Bogart film.

Gorgeous little theme when they fall asleep, exhausted, believing they are way out of reach of the lake, when the camera rises up, and shows the lake right nearby.

I still recall that exquisite theme every now and then.

I keep thinking I've heard a short re-recorded suite of this music on some CD compilation somewhere.

Is it on one of the Chandos composer series, or a Silva Screen tribute to Bogart or something?

Criswell predicts:

In a short time, Howard L will weigh in on this, one of his favorite topics.

Well.....to answer myself, it appears that I am right AND wrong---and there is good news AND bad news:

On iTunes and Amazon available for download there is an 8:55 minute suite from Allan Gray's THE AFRICAN QUEEN. That's the good news.

The bad news is that this suite derives from a 2002 "unmentionable" cd release---a compilation of musical selections edited from the actual final music/dialog tracks of Humphrey Bogart movies, and whose sound quality, according to purchasers and reviewers is far less than ideal. What a surprise! smile

(What is also interesting is that the Soundtrack Collector site, which is based in the Netherlands, doesn't list this CD release and its contents even though it may be a legal product in Europe. So much for complete transparency and accuracy in the SC database...... smile )

Well, Howard L......at least you have something to chew on until the Record Masters come to feed you something substantial.

Perhaps, in HINDsight I shouldn't have said anything, but since you've HOUNDed me, my only excuse is the jungle fever, the swarming tsetse flies, and the leeches made me nearly go out-of-my-mind, and I didn't know what I was saying......

There is a short suite on the ASV Records album "British by Arrangement" with the City of Prague Philharmonic conducted by Gavin Sutherland. The suite is arranged by Philip Lane, who also worked for Chandos.
From Lane's notes in the booklet:

"Allan Gray was much helped by Norman Del Mar, who orchestrated and conducted the score as well as composing cues on occasion. None of the actual score survives..."
