Any of you classical music buffs have one or both of these? I know by reputation that they are classic recordings and I have listened to a couple of the living stereo releases that are in the boxes including Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops recording of Offenbach: Gaïté Parisienne.

I don't have the box sets, but do have the SACD releases from the mid-2000's. I'd say you don't have much to lose on these box sets. The individual releases are considered such fantastic combinations of sound/performance that they are still being remastered and reissued individually at:

I have many, many of the original RCA "Shaded Dog" Living Stereo releases on vinyl. Condition and pressing are paramount when collecting these.

Yes, I have both. I'm still working through them but I've generally liked what I've heard.

The presentation is excellent and the quantity and quality of music is first class ... provided you don't mind a sound which is not modern. I have many recordings by other artists of many of these works and I accept that the sound won't be same as, say, a recording from the 1980s or later.

There are many pieces of work which are new to me and I find the mixture of artists / composers compelling. That said, I think Vol.2 is a step-down: firstly, many of the discs in Vol.1 carry two albums, or at least, extra tracks from a second album taking the CD playing times to 70mins or more. This is not so in Vol.2. And, secondly, there is a greater emphasis on opera in Vol.2 and whilst I'm happy to add these to my collection they will get far less air-time than the orchestral albums.

Of interest to me, in particular, are works which are not so readily available in modern recordings ... perhaps such works have fallen out of fashion.

I've bought quite a few box sets these last two years. These two are not my favourites but I have no regrets about buying them.

I've been looking at the Living Presence boxes as well, vol 3 is due out soon. It is a pity they did not include Victory at Sea in the Rca boxes. I have all 3 of the LPs. I can grab the RCA boxes for about $85 each

I have the MLP boxes and they are terrific. But another one I just love is the Decca Analogue Years set. Just like Mercury, Decca had its signature sound too and the quality of the recordings is amazing.

I've had my eye on that Decca box set for some time ... and the UK price is fair, too ... but I'm struggling to listen to all of the box sets I already own so, for the moment ...

I gather that the long-promised Rozsa Violin Concerto has yet to appear in this series? The original was no audiophile delight. Barely stereo, it spotlighted the violin in a rather hard-edged fashion. But if the SACD offers three channels . . . Might it make a difference?

My boxes should arrive tomorrow.

Get ready to put some spare time aside ... than again: make that a long time. I've had the two sets for a year / 9 mths and haven't got through all of the discs yet smile

Enjoy!

And they have arrived ...smile Too bad I have Klute/All the President's Men sitting in the cd player in my office at the moment. Jane Fonda, Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman are refusing to give ground Beethoven and company.

Now to figure out which box to open first and whether to listen at home, in the car or at the office....choices... choices....Do I play them in order or cherry pick what to play.

I took Box 1 home last night and cracked it open. Extracted Disc 1 the sampler disc & had to fight off one of my cat's who was trying to keep me from inserting anything into the cd player. All I can say is wow. I like the non-classical stuff on the disc, including the Sons of the Pioneer's classic. I wonder if Ken (Festus) Curtis was part of the group for that recording. Given the size of the boxes and that I have to trek in from my car across snowy and icy stretches of sidewalk I only took home box 1 last night; box 2 is headed home tonight.

I have bought so many of these on CD over the years that the boxed sets would be a waste of money for me, I'm afraid. I hope those who are discovering them appreciate the extraordinary recordings/performancs.

Couldn't pass up the price that pop market had these two sets for last weekend. I have countless hours of listening ahead. Although I understand the Box 2 cd runtimes are considerably shorter. I had only 3 classical cds prior to these boxes.
