...apparently minus the vocals, sung by different artists on the French and Canadian LPs; however a very welcome release !

DCM 161

DCM161CHANEL SOLITAIRE • Music by Jean Musy
DCM 161 • LIMITED EDITION 350 • UPC : 609015642627
Release date: February 15, 2015

This is the CD premiere for Chanel Solitaire (1981), a gorgeous soundtrack by a composer known primarily as arranger and accompanist for many famous French singers. Jean Musy indeed started working in the 1960s with Joe Dassin, Catherine Lara, Nicolas Peyrac, Barbara, Nicole Croisille, Yves Duteil, Françoise Hardy, Charles Aznavour, to name only a few stars. This self-taught musician has contributed to over a thousand 45 rpms and some 150 LP albums !

Jean Musy still found time to compose no less than 70 film scores for directors such as Costa-Gavras (Clair de femme) and Jean-Claude Brisseau (Noce blanche, L’ange noir, etc). However, it is with Chanel Solitaire, directed by Charles Kaczender in 1981, that he was able to give the full measure of his talent. This drama, starring Marie-France Pisier, Timothy Dalton and Rutger Hauer, traces the career and the love life of the great fashion designer Coco Chanel. Unfortunately, the movie failed at the box office and its soundtrack sunk into undeserved oblivion as well.

Performed by the Orchestre symphonique de la Garde républicaine conducted by Roger Boutry, the music from Chanel Solitaire remains true to the sound of the early 20th century period, relying on a wide variety of deeply sensitive themes. While the original LP soundtrack included only thirty minutes of orchestral music, our release offers an extended version that should meet the expectations of all romantic listeners.

This limited edition of 350 copies, licensed by Gruppo Sugar Group, has an 8-page color booklet.

I saw this announcement earlier today and didn't really take time to read it all. Sad that the song is not included. I guess Mireille Mathieu is very reluctant to allow her vocals to be used (or she's too expensive.)

Wasn't this issued digitally 7 or 8 years ago? I know that version had the song.

This is still worth getting as it's got about 10 more minutes of score.

Now that I have the DCM CD and can compare, there is music on the original LP (digital?) release that is NOT on their CD.

Mainly I don't hear the track called "Grand Premiere Coco Chanel."

I haven't had time to read the notes yet and maybe some of the differences are addressed there.

I have the "Ariola 203337" LP from 1983 (16 Tracks 36min). To my knowledge it has never been released digitaly.
Now I also get the new Disques CineMusique CD and compard it with the LP.
So, track 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 12, 14 on the CD are similar with the LP.
Track 1, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15, 16, 17 are new and aditional music/score . I’m not sure if you can hear all this "new material" in the movie.

I regret that the tracks

A1 Grande Premiere Coco Chanel
A4 Coco Chanel et la Soeur
A7 Boy et Etienne
B1 Chanel Solitaire (the song by Mirelle Mathieu)
B 2 La Lecon d'Amour
B7 Separation

on the LP are not includet on the new CD. Thy all have a so warm and beatiful chello theme and I miss this on the new release.

This score is one of my holy grails and it’s fine to have now more music on CD. Yes this one is still worth getting and well done Disques CineMusique!

I too have both the French and Canadian LPs and regret DCM was unable to include the missing tracks. These were not available for this release, even though DCM offered to include these tracks from LPs. The rights holder apparently refused-thus leaving the CD devoid of some of most moving parts of the score...

Agreed, it’s a pity that all the tracks from the l.p. are not included. This new version somehow doesn’t pack the same punch, nor follow the movie’s narrative as effectively. And if it’s a contractual issue, then how is it that some of the tracks on the l.p. are included? I got in touch with Mr. Musy a couple of years back and he told me he had felt like he was forgotten. This word pops up in the liner notes of the CD and I can’t help but wonder if Mr. Musy decided to remodel the soundtrack for CD since, to his perception, the original soundtrack had been forgotten (though a quick search of “Jean Musy” on Youtube will squelch this rumour). I guess there are no worries after all, because now we have two versions and two is always better than one!

Regarding the new music, some observations:

Le theme des chevaux (several versions): Musy has elaborated on this. The first version appears to be piano/synthesizer arrangement, as befitting Musy’s penchant for composing with electronic keyboards.

A new theme not on original CD: appearing several times. Will have to check out movie to see if this pops up.

Incidental ballroom and/or dinner music: again will have to check out the movie

“Finale”: surprise drum arrangement – didn’t see that coming!
