I just picked up the Naxos reissue of Salter/Dessau's HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, containing Bill Whittaker's 2007 revision of his splendid original Marco Polo liner notes. This time around, I paid a little more attention to the references to certain classic music compositions which found their way into fleeting references and homages in HOF, including Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and Busoni's Nocturne Symphonique. I actually remember asking Hans about the little touch of Beethoven when I interviewed him for his Cinefantastique cover story. Until re-reading Bill's notes, however, I had never heard, nor even heard of, the Busoni piece. I've now ordered a Busoni CD which includes the Nocturne, so I can finally become acquainted with it, and see if I recognize echoes of it in the HOF score.

Bill's notes also refer to "joyful references to Carl Maria von Weber," without mentioning any specific titles, which naturally piques my curiosity. So, John, if you're listening, would you please be so kind as to point me in the direction of the von Weber selections to which Bill was referring? As with the Beethoven and the Busoni, I'd love to get an insight into Hans's tributes to his musical forebears.

Much obliged,

Preston
