...Matthew Margeson).

Saw this film last night and it's a fun time at the flicks.
So far (for me), Matthew Vaughn hasn't directed a film I haven't thoroughly enjoyed.
I've not seen LAYER CAKE yet (his first film), but I've loved STARDUST, KICK-ASS and X-MEN FIRST CLASS (my fave X-Men film) and the enjoyment continued last night.
It's basically Kick-Ass meets Bond/Spy films, with lots of knowing winks and in-jokes about the new-style oh-so-serious spy films (Bourne, new Bond) and the camp over-the-top old style ones.
The score is pretty decent too, although the first hour sounded much stronger than the second.
Stuff stood out more earlier on, but kind of developed into the usual constant wall-of-sound style that smothers most action films these days.
I didn't like the baddie music that much (a processed/muted/reverb mix thing). I would have preferred something more iconic, but I guess it does underline their sinister actions well enough.
Only two things bugged me about the film. Seeing The Sun (SCUM) Newspaper given such prominent exposure (the product placement in the film is very annoying) and a UK soap actress I really don't like playing the main guys mum.
Other than that, it's a good spy-action film, VERY OTT, with added violence and gore.
The final scene is a clever spoof of the old Bond epilogues too.

I haven't seen it since it came out, but I remember liking it more than his later work.

POSSIBLE SPOILER!!

One other thing that (slightly) bugged me about the film.
The wholesale rip-off of Stephen King's CELL novel for certain sequences.
Since CELL is to be released as a film, I imagine the makers would be well pi$$ed off by this film in that regard.

Great fun. Good to see an adult adventure rather than a tame kids film. The church massacre sequence is jaw dropping. Enjoyed hearing an orchestral score for the most part but nothing registered. Especially the action finale. Still it could have sounded a whole lot worse.

Seriously?

It has a fantastic heroic theme that plays throughout and an awesome theme for Valentine! It's the score Winter Soldier wishes it had! smile

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LA-LA LAND RECORDS PPRESENTS
KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE – ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK

Featuring Original Music by Henry Jackman & Matthew Margeson

(February 3, 2015– Los Angeles, CA) – La-La Land Records is proud to announce the release of KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally and on CD February 10, 2015. The album features the original music by composers Henry Jackman (BIG HERO 6, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDER) and Matthew Margeson (KICK-ASS 2, SKYLINE).

“I am now happy to count four films I have collaborated on with Matthew Vaughn,” said Jackman. “Matthew is a true artist, and will stop at nothing to see his singular vision through at every stage of the filmmaking process. This makes scoring his films a true please, albeit sometimes a challenging one. You are confident at the end of that day that the hard work bears the signature of it creative leader, without compromise, and without fail.”

“Considering this is my second collaboration with Henry on a Matthew Vaughn production, one might think the process had become streamlined and second nature. I assure you this is not the case,” jests Margeson. “With every new weapon introduced, test given by Merlin, or head that explodes, Vaughn has challenged us to constantly up the ante - pumping more adrenaline and injecting more excitement into the music at every given opportunity.”

Henry Jackman has built a successful career in the recording industry, not only releasing 3 acclaimed solo albums, but also co-writing, mixing, producing, and programming with a host of outstanding artists including Seal and Art of Noise. He co-wrote songs for the films THE FAMILY MAN and ANASTASIA. In 2006, Jackman's accomplishments garnered the attention of Hans Zimmer and John Powell, who soon hired him to compose additional music on such films as THE DARK KNIGHT, THE DA VINCI CODE, KUNG FU PANDA and the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN franchise. Jackman's first major solo scoring gig was MONSTERS AND ALIENS in 2009, a family movie with a heavy action score. Jackman's recent film scores span across a wide range of genres, from action films to period dramas to family films, including: CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, HENRI 4, WRECK-IT RALPH, PUSS IN BOOTS, KICK-ASS, TURBO, THIS IS THE END, G.I. JOE: RETALIATION, ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER, MAN ON A LEDGE, WINNIE THE POOH, GULLIVER’S TRAVELS and MONSTERS VS. ALIENS.

Matthew Margeson attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied film music and honed his skills as a pianist. In 2003 he was invited to start an apprenticeship at Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions. While at Remote Control, Margeson developed his composition style collaborating on feature films such as: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER among many others. In 2010, Margeson completed his first studio feature, SKYLINE, for Universal Studios, which was nominated for the BSOSPIRIT Revelation Composer Award at the Úbeda Film Music Festival. He has also composed the music for multiple TV shows and video games, including HBO’s EASTBOUND AND DOWN, and Sony Playstation’s ALL-STAR BATTLE ROYALE and KNACK. Most recently, Margeson provided the underscore arrangements for Disney’s acclaimed INTO THE WOODS. Margeson upcoming films include Paramount’s SCOUTS VS. ZOMBIES.

Based upon the acclaimed comic book and directed by Matthew Vaughn (KICK ASS, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS), KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE tells a story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined, but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.

“KINGSMAN was an absolute pleasure to be a part of, as it’s given us a chance to write our own, somewhat twisted version of a British espionage underscore for a truly unique film,” said Margeson.

Twentieth Century Fox presents KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE in theaters February 13, 2015. La-La Land Records presents KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, available February 10, 2015, through all major digital providers and on CD via www.lalalandrecords.com. The CD will also be available at Amazon and other major music retailers on February 17, 2015.

I'm going to guess you didn't like the following scores:

Gone Girl, Tron Legacy, Hanna, X-Men First Class, Dredd, Drive, The Social Network, Attack the Block, Sunshine?

Haven't heard all of them. I do like Tron Legacy. Marvel themes just don't hold a candle to Williams, Horner, Goldsmith, even old school Zimmer. I couldn't hum a single note of a single Marvel film from the last decade or more. They don't register with me. Totally forgettable. While I really like Powell's X-Men 3 score I couldn't even hum that theme.

I agree with you this far!

I could understand that with the main theme, but surely his Dark Phoenix theme registered with you at least? That one is pretty unforgettable for me, and it's too bad it wasn't in the score more! I do agree that much of the rest of the score was generic (though exciting), especially by Powell's standards.

Now Hancock on the other hand -- THAT Powell score could not be mistaken for any other superhero score. It's just great and I hope Varese does a Deluxe Edition some time.

Love Hancock! I'd probably rather see deluxe editions of Powell's Bourne scores though.

This is a BALL TEARER of a film! Imaginative, clever, witty, AND well cast with a terrific Colin Firth out of his normal comfort zone and HAVING A BLAST! My wife didn't believe it was Mark Hamill even when I told her!....and the score, while modern, is an orchestral delight. Last time I noticed and enjoyed a thematic score like this was velasquez's Hercules!
Mr Lalaland....agree totally with you....this proves CAP THE WINTER SOLDIER could've had a great score...what a pitiful lost opportunity.
Go see this movie everyone!

This is a BALL TEARER of a film!

Meaning, um... excruciatingly painful and debilitating, requiring weeks of physical therapy and lost wages?

Meaning it is BALLS TO WALL insane and will rip your balls off like a paper towel.

The church scene is beyond a shadow of a doubt one of the most gleefully and horrifically violent things I've seen in cinema and just awesome. I was cheering when BLANK was shooting women, cutting them with axes, punching them, impaling them with wooden church pews and of course, his vicious and wonderful killing of the pastor.

Hated KICK-ASS but loved this film. Go figure.

I liked this score too and yes, FAR MORE thematic then Captain America but if you listen to the audio commentary, the director's clearly state they CHOOSE to go in a different direction and wanted Captain's theme to be earned.

After reading some reviews and depictions of some scenes I've lost most of my interest in the film to be honest. (will probably rent it though) Still interested in how the score sounds, may still get the soundtrack.
