Good question! I would expect it is coming out from Intrada, because one part you left out of your summary was manderley's answer to Bruce K. that BOTH titles had already been spoken for (I'm guessing both by Intrada)...now if Die Sister Die underperformed for Intrada I guess it's possible they may pass on releasing A Walk in the Forest, in which case I suspect (and hope) that Bruce would pick up the title to release, since it is Friedhofer's last score and supposed to be very good...but Die Sister Die wasn't that long ago so let's be patient and hope Intrada puts it out this year. Finding the right party to license the title from may be the tricky part in this case... Yavar

I suspect we can substitute "excited" for "enraged" here, Morricone. Yavar

Here's the thread where Manderley had his big reveal: http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=66663&archive=0 I'm having trouble finding the thread where I suggested the two titles to Bruce, but I'm pretty sure it was the same one where he replied that he'd definitely be interested in doing them and then Manderley followed up saying very simply that they'd been spoken for. Here, however, is the excerpt from the Friedhofer bio about A Walk in the Forest, with some fascinating (and sad) anecdotes: http://tinyurl.com/friedhoferbookextract Yavar

Roger Feigelson was in talks with the current owners of DIE, SISTER, DIE / THE COMPANION before he ever contacted me in 2013. When he did, to get some background information on the film, I told him about the master tapes I had which he could use. During all of this time, before and after his conversations with me, Roger was working with the film's owners and the Friedhofer estate, and then Intrada proceeded to put the project into final production once I delivered the tapes to them. I don't believe there was any time in the last 3-4 years during which Kritzerland or any other producers had an opportunity to tackle the project---Intrada had obviously been thinking about it for quite awhile and was well into the due diligence process by mid-2013 as I recall. A WALK IN THE FOREST is in the hands of a production team---not Intrada or Kritzerland---and to the best of my knowledge, no production date is set. The 40-year-old masters for FOREST have been played, however, and I've been told that they still sound great, so I guess my den closet was a good place to keep them! They will make their announcement on FOREST when they are ready, and I'll not say more until then.

If it ever comes out, I'll surely buy a copy!

Not Intrada or Kritzerland? Shocker! Could it be LLL's first Friedhofer? Quartet? Or is Counterpoint's triumphant return with Kaplan's Kangaroo a sign that it might be them? Thanks for the news that it is indeed coming! Yavar

Die Sister Die was very interesting, but I agree that A Walk in the Forest is even moreso. For those who can't be bothered to go to the Google document of the Friedhofer bio (or buy it for that matter...or request it at the library), here are some choice comments about it from Charles Boyer (aka Page Cook), who chose it as the best film score of 1975: "So brilliant is the music, so dazzling and subtle its impact, that the impulse is to write around the score, to avoid the superlatives it evokes. It reaches to the heart of the poetry and subject of the film, i.e. 'Man as Nature's partner': few short subject features have been graced with such music...Friedhofer's score for A Walk in the Forest is so brilliant it is a cultural crime he is not writing music for today's better films." I mean, DAMN. Now I want to see the film, too! Actually if rights can be worked out for the score, I don't see why they couldn't be worked out for the (otherwise apparently lost) film as well. Do you have a copy of the short film in your closet too, Manderley? Since the score is certainly brief, including even a Quicktime file of the film itself to fill up the disc* (if not having a separate DVD in the package) would be really awesome. *This could be done similar to the third disc of James Fitzpatrick's beautiful El Cid re-recording on Tadlow, where the music on it consists of a few alternates plus a suite from Double Indemnity, but when put it a computer it also has Quicktime videos of the sessions and such. The first GNP Crescendo issue of Star Trek: First Contact is another example like that. Yavar

There's other labels, too. Perhaps this Friedhofer title might arrive on Perseverance? Don't forget MusicBox, either, since they also release some soundtracks from American productions.

Let us wait and see how many months (& years?) transpire before A WALK IN THE FOREST comes to fruition. I think it is a shame that Intrada's production team was preparing DIE SISTER DIE for 4+ years only to have this title last only 7 months in their catalogue.

When Manderley speaks, it's best to pay attention: FOREST and DIE SISTER, both simply "sitting on a shelf in his closet", teach. As DIE SISTER, by now, has been promptly released by Intrada, and we have just learned that FOREST will be done on another side (maybe coupled with another title, being "only" 33 min), I'm wondering if the "special closet" of Manderley has something else preserved, and if the vast knowledge and information of Manderley can address to find some other hidden treasure, some other "lost Friedhofer" in the form of VERA CRUZ or THREE CAME HOME. The elapsing of the time calls for a preservation of old existing materials and it is a miracle if the tapes of FOREST and SISTERS were in perfect quality after decades: I think Sony had to send in the closet of Manderley the last surviving 70 mm roadshow copy of ALAMO found in Toronto, to save it from degradation: http://www.in70mm.com/news/2009/alamo_print/bryden/
