I'm just now getting around to hearing this score..... WOW! Track 3 ("A New Life") is just so unique! The reason I'm starting this thread is that the main theme sounds a LOT like a Williams piece! Can anyone tell me which piece I'm thinking it sounds like, because I can not put my finger on it!

This was actually my very first Desplat score as well. I rented the movie, loved the impressionistic score, and got the CD at my first opportunity.

Ha! I was going to post this question until I did a search and I think I found the answer right here. Jim hasn't come back yet to tell us if that's the JW score he was thinking about. Anyway, I was going to say something like this -

Hello again! Just back from a nice time abroad (Scroteland), and - among many other things which I may post in the "What's New in Your Collection?" bit - I picked up Desplat's GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING in a thing called a "shop" for about three quid. Not that I'm a big Desplat fan, in fact I've only heard about a tenth of his output, but I really really like GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING. They were also selling the soundtrack to the porno version of the film (GIRL WITH A PEARL NECKLACE), and I picked that up too for 50p. Music by Bazooka Joe and His Gazongas. Freaky stuff.
But I digress. As I said, I really like the Desplat score. Overall there are touches of Elfman at his most lyrical, but there's one recurring theme in particular ("Griet's Theme") which is reminding me of one particular piece of music, and I can't put my finger on it. It's a kind of surging waltz-type piece, and in its melody if not orchestration it shares some similarities with Billy Goldenberg's octave leaps and key changes. Still, I'm pretty sure it's not a Goldenberg piece I'm being reminded of in this case. Maybe it's a combination of the melodic material and the orchestration, but the name "John Williams" comes to mind. Not sure though. Can anyone help?

And so it came to pass that someone suggested SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET. I think that's it, but I'm still not 100% sure. Could someone please let me know in a scientifically plausible way, if that is indeed the theme which I am thinking of?
And Jim - Was the answer from three years ago good enough for you, or are you still thinking?
